TUTEH is a wholly owned company of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), established as the vehicle for the generation, growth, and sustainability of the third-stream income of the University. Third stream income is income that is distinct from government subsidies (first stream) and student fees (second stream). In the case of TUT, it also excludes donations and bequests, which are the responsibility of the Advancement Office. TUTEH was established at the beginning of the year 2018 after a preparatory period that started in 2015 when the Council of the TUT approved the Turnaround Framework (TF) and the Financial Growth Strategy (FGS). The purpose of these two strategic documents was to address the long-term financial sustainability of the University. One of the key recommendations of both the TF and FGS was for TUT to develop and enhance its third stream income (TSI) in line with some best practices in South Africa and the world over.
