The Department of Community Safety is seeking a Works Inspector: Mechanical to be based at the Charlotte Maxeke Facility Maintenance Hub, within the Maintenance Directorate. This role is central to ensuring that building and infrastructure projects within the health sector are executed safely, lawfully, and to an acceptable quality standard. The inspector acts as the department’s technical eyes and ears on project sites, checking both new construction and maintenance work against the relevant legal frameworks and engineering norms. The position is a technical, OSD-graded post offering a competitive annual salary with benefits, and it calls for a candidate who can work independently while also contributing effectively within a team environment.

To be considered, applicants must possess a National Diploma in the relevant T/N/S streams or an equivalent qualification, alternatively an N3 certificate combined with a passed trade test in the mechanical environment. Registration as an Engineering Technician is also accepted. A valid driver’s licence is mandatory, as the role requires travel to various project sites. The ideal candidate will have a solid working knowledge of key legislation including the National Building Standards Act of 1977, the Promotion of Access to Information Act of 2000, the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act of 2000, the Government Immovable Asset Management Act of 2007, the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1993, and the Public Finance Management Act of 1999, along with regulations governing infrastructure matters in health. Strong communication, analytical, problem-solving and technical skills are essential, as are personal attributes such as being a proactive, resourceful, responsible, and responsive team player.

The responsibilities of this role are extensive and demanding. The inspector must verify that all new and ongoing maintenance work on project sites complies with all relevant regulations and legislation. This includes conducting site inspections to ensure proper quality control is maintained, compiling estimates of repairs and costs for minor new works and maintenance projects, and maintaining an electronic record system that tracks both outstanding and completed work. The role also involves developing progress reports, interpreting and producing plans and sketches, and drawing up quotation documents and specifications. The inspector participates in the adjudication process for quotations, offering technical recommendations, and liaises with various stakeholders on technical matters. Contractors on site are guided and advised on compliance with the relevant legal requirements, and the inspector evaluates their work against prescribed standards. Payment documents must be compiled, variation orders processed, and requests for deadline extensions handled, all while ensuring effective contract administration. Finally, the inspector develops reports on project problems and gathers and submits information relating to the extended public works programme, helping to monitor the broader impact of infrastructure initiatives.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments, one practical exercise and one integrity assessment, with both scored as part of the interview process. A personnel suitability check, including verification of qualifications, criminal record, citizenship, credit record and employment history, will also be conducted. The department is committed to employment equity and encourages youth, people with disability, and candidates from coloured, Indian and white population groups to apply; applicants with disabilities must attach a confirmation certificate from a registered medical practitioner. Please note that only applications submitted on the specified Z83 form with an attached CV will be considered, and foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Since only shortlisted candidates are contacted, applicants who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should accept that their application was unsuccessful.
