This vacancy is for a Video Editor within the Technology division, specifically in TV Media’s Video Editing unit, reporting to the Manager of Video Editing. The core purpose of the role is to deliver efficient and effective non-linear editing, taking raw visual and audio footage and sequencing it into a polished, comprehensive final television product that is ready for broadcast. Working in support of the unit’s broader business objectives, the editor ensures that every programme meets customer requirements and adheres to strict broadcast standards. This is an operational, hands-on role within a fast-paced broadcasting environment, and the position is graded as an OSD role in the public broadcasting sector, with the accompanying conditions and responsibilities.

The key duties are wide-ranging and centre on both creative and technical excellence. The editor will edit a variety of television genres, including sports, news, documentaries, promos, line-ups, and talk shows, ensuring there are no comebacks regarding video and audio quality. This involves applying appropriate video effects to enhance the mood of supplied material, providing creative input and advice to clients to strengthen the story and nature of a programme, and using measuring instruments to check video and audio levels according to required broadcast specifications, including EBU standards and the R128 loudness standard. The role also requires managing projects within allocated time constraints, maintaining an above-average rating on service level agreements with internal stakeholders, and completing booking forms accurately so that they reflect the true developments during edit sessions. The editor must also test editing equipment before production, report technical faults to the relevant department and follow up until resolved, participate in studio upgrades by testing equipment and software compatibility, and take part in knowledge-sharing activities. Compliance with standard operating procedures, asset management tracking, performance management policies, OHS safety requirements, and company policies is essential, as is escalating faulty equipment immediately to technical support and participating in departmental risk mitigation.

To be considered, candidates need a Diploma or Degree in Film and Television at NQF level 6 or 7, or equivalent. An MC101 Media Composer 101 Editing Essentials certificate, a Broadcast Operations Internship certificate, and good computer literacy are required, alongside at least one year of practical video editing experience within a TV video editing environment. Exposure to the broadcasting environment is critical, as is a working knowledge of Avid Media Composer, understanding of graphic elements and how to import them, and the ability to use video editing software, audio tools for mixing, and relevant measuring instruments. The successful applicant must understand video editing principles, digital workflows, video formats and media file types, including DTT, and have a good grasp of TV technical and operational standards such as PAL versus NTSC. Knowledge of SAP and the OHS Act is also required. The ability to conceptualise ideas into visual elements for television programming is identified as a critical and scarce skill, so candidates demonstrating this creativity will be strongly favoured. Additionally, the position involves mentoring and coaching junior staff and interns, so prior experience or aptitude in guiding less experienced team members is advantageous. Given the collaborative nature of the work, the editor must serve clients in a technically proficient, empathetic, friendly and helpful manner, and engage regularly with stakeholders to understand current and future needs in line with service level agreements. This role offers the opportunity to work across a diverse range of high-profile television content, contributing directly to the quality and creativity of the broadcaster’s output.
