The Western Cape Government’s Department of Agriculture is seeking to fill two Veterinary Public Health Officer positions based in Elsenburg. These roles sit within the provincial regulatory framework responsible for safeguarding public health through the oversight of meat production and processing. As a Veterinary Public Health Officer, you will be a key player in ensuring that abattoirs across the province operate in full compliance with the Meat Safety legislation, thereby contributing directly to the safety and integrity of the food supply chain. This is a technical, compliance-focused role that requires a blend of regulatory knowledge, practical auditing skill, and the ability to engage professionally with stakeholders in the meat industry.

To be considered for this position, applicants must hold a relevant National Diploma in Environmental Health, Animal Health, or Veterinary Public Health at NQF level 6, as recognised by SAQA. A minimum of one year of relevant working experience is required, along with a valid code B (or higher) driving licence, as the role involves travel to abattoirs and related facilities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a sound working knowledge of environmental health legislation and policies, meat safety legislation and policies, the regulatory framework of the public service, municipal by-laws governing meat safety, and environmental affairs legislation. Familiarity with food safety risk analysis and food safety auditing is also essential. In addition, strong computer literacy, report writing, organising and planning, communication, analytical, and presentation skills are required to succeed in this environment.

The core duties of the post revolve around the inspection and auditing of abattoirs for compliance with Meat Safety legislation. You will be expected to conduct regular inspections, perform audits, and carry out general functions as required by the legislation. Beyond these day-to-day tasks, the role contributes to the broader provincial objective of maintaining and improving meat safety standards. This means you will be expected to apply your technical knowledge to identify risks, recommend corrective actions, and support continuous improvement in abattoir operations.

Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process includes interviews, as well as two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability for the post, and an integrity assessment focusing on ethical conduct. Candidates must also submit duly completed vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe, and failure to do so without reasonable justification may result in exclusion from further consideration. By applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers or managers for reference checks, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department, and all applications must be submitted online before the closing date. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified professional passionate about public health and food safety to make a meaningful impact within a provincial government setting.
