This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the public service as a Transport Officer for Logistical Services within the Department of Social Development, based in the Western Cape Government’s Metro South district. The role sits within the department’s operational support structure, ensuring that government transport resources are managed efficiently to enable the delivery of social development services across the region. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day administration, maintenance oversight, and control of the government’s fleet (the GG fleet) within the district, as well as coordinating alternative transport arrangements when needed. This is a hands-on logistical role that requires careful record-keeping, verification of transport usage, and direct supervision of staff, all within the framework of public service regulations and departmental policies.

To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification at NQF level 6 or an equivalent or higher qualification, together with at least one year of relevant experience. The role demands a solid working knowledge of legislation, regulatory frameworks, policies, and best practices that apply to transport and logistical functions. Candidates should understand information systems used for managing knowledge and data, project management principles, operational management practices, and procurement and tendering processes. Familiarity with policy development, monitoring and review processes, modern governance systems, and public service procedures is also essential. The department expects a good grasp of constitutional, legal, and institutional arrangements governing the South African public sector, as well as public finance, human resources, and discourse management processes. Knowledge of the Public Finance Management Act, National and Provincial Treasury Regulations, and related financial prescripts is important, along with an understanding of labour relations legislation, performance management, and the functioning of sister departments and related functional areas. Awareness of regional and local political, economic, and social affairs impacting the Western Cape provincial government is also required. In addition, candidates need strong numeracy, computer literacy, and language skills to handle reporting, communication, and administrative tasks effectively.

The core duties involve administering, maintaining, and controlling the district’s government fleet, ordering taxi transport as requested through the relevant transport management system, and administering, verifying, and monitoring the use of rental vehicles. The post also carries supervisory responsibilities, meaning the officer will oversee employees and ensure that transport operations run smoothly and in line with departmental standards. Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process includes interviews, the submission of vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe, and two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and another assessing ethical conduct. Reference checks will be conducted, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving previous employment. The selection process will be guided by the department’s employment equity targets, and by applying, candidates consent to these verification procedures. This is a demanding but rewarding role for someone with a strong administrative background and a commitment to public service logistics.
