This role offers an opportunity to join the Fleet Maintenance unit within the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, specifically supporting the panel beating and mechanical sections at the Bedfordview centre. As a Tradesman Aid, you will be part of a team responsible for keeping the department’s vehicle fleet operational, safe, and roadworthy. The position is graded at an entry-level salary band and is suited to individuals with a foundational technical background who are eager to build a career in vehicle maintenance and repair within the public service.

To be considered, applicants must have a minimum of Grade 12 or equivalent, together with an N2 to N6 qualification in Mechanical Engineering. A recognised qualification as a Motor or Diesel Mechanic will be a strong advantage, as will any prior mechanical repair knowledge. Candidates must hold a valid driver’s licence and have no criminal record. A minimum of one year of experience is required in preparing vehicles for repairs and working in a workshop environment. The role also demands solid verbal and written communication skills, computer literacy including email and internet use, and a working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and general public service management frameworks.

The core duties involve supporting the full range of accident repair work on government fleet vehicles. You will assist with preventive maintenance tasks such as engine tune-ups, oil changes, filter replacements, tyre rotations, and wheel balance testing. You will also help carry out repairs and replacements of parts and components according to specifications, with a focus on maximum reliability. Troubleshooting and resolving functionality problems reported by clients is an important part of the work, as is maintaining accurate vehicle records. You will assist in assessing vehicles or machinery to correctly diagnose issues, liaise with clients to understand their automotive needs, and clearly communicate any vehicular defects or problems identified.

This is a three-post vacancy, and the department is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer. Preference may be given to suitable candidates from designated groups in line with the department’s equity plan, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Shortlisted applicants will be required to submit certified copies of their qualifications, identity document, and driver’s licence before the interview. All candidates will undergo screening and security vetting, including criminal record checks, citizenship verification, creditworthiness, reference checks, and qualification verification. Applicants with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. It is also important to note that only online applications are accepted, and all sections of the Z83 application form must be completed fully, with a detailed CV listing at least three contactable references. Incomplete applications will be disqualified, and failure to receive a response within three months means the application was unsuccessful. Any personal information submitted will be processed in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act.
