The Department of Public Works in Mpumalanga is advertising four entry-level Tradesman Aid posts within its General Maintenance Tradesman unit, spread across the Ehlanzeni, Gert Sibande Msukaligwa, Nkangala Middelburg, and Bohlabela Mashishing centres. This is a supportive, hands-on role intended for individuals who want to begin a career in building maintenance and repair work within the public sector. Tradesman Aids work under the direction of qualified artisans and play an important part in keeping government buildings safe, functional, and well maintained. The position is graded at Level 03, making it an accessible starting point for candidates with limited formal work experience.

To be considered, applicants need only a Grade 10 certificate, as no prior experience is required. However, candidates must bring a working knowledge of occupational health and safety principles, along with good listening and communication skills and the ability to build sound interpersonal relations. These competencies are essential because the work involves close collaboration with artisans, supervisors, and occasionally building occupants, while also requiring strict adherence to safety protocols.

The core duties of the Tradesman Aid revolve around assisting artisans with repair and maintenance tasks in government buildings. This includes taking proper care of hand tools, machines, and electric tools, performing minor repair and maintenance work, and identifying when more significant maintenance or repair interventions are needed. The role also involves carrying, loading, and off-loading tools and materials, checking faults to determine what repairs or maintenance are required, and keeping workshops and plant rooms clean and orderly. Housekeeping duties are directly linked to compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, so the incumbent must be mindful of safety at all times. The physical nature of the job means the successful candidate should expect to climb ladders for inspections, work in confined spaces, and carry out maintenance tasks on various government buildings.

Several important conditions apply to these posts. Applications must be submitted online through the provincial e-recruitment portal, and no manual, emailed, or faxed applications will be accepted. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and they will be required to submit certified copies of their documents on or before the interview date. Candidates with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by SAQA and provide proof of evaluation when shortlisted. Applicants are also expected to disclose any business interests or remunerative work outside their official duties, particularly if they are a director or shareholder of a company conducting business with the state. The selection process may include practical exercises, integrity assessments, and personnel suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship, financial assets, qualifications, and employment references. The successful candidate will be required to enter into an annual performance agreement and disclose their financial interests each year. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and applicants who do not hear back within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful. These posts are part of the broader public service recruitment framework, and all advertised conditions should be read carefully before applying.
