This permanent position as a Telkom Operator, also known as Switchboard Support Services, sits within the Chief Directorate of Metro Health Services at Khayelitsha District Hospital in the Western Cape. The role forms part of the hospital’s administrative and communications backbone, making sure every telephone call, internal message and public address announcement reaches the right person quickly and professionally. As the first point of contact for patients, families, clinical staff and external partners, the operator greatly influences how the hospital is perceived and how efficiently its daily operations run.

The core responsibility is to manage the hospital’s high-volume switchboard and to coordinate page staff through the Public Address system. This includes handling both incoming and outgoing calls, answering telephone enquiries, redirecting callers, and delivering accurate messages in a timely manner. The operator must also take care of all telecommunication equipment, monitor whether the switchboard and telephones are functioning correctly, and report any faults to the supervisor or the relevant technical person. Maintaining an up-to-date internal telephone directory is another key duty, as is providing constructive feedback on the operational running of the component and supporting the supervisor by adhering strictly to the Code of Conduct for the Public Service.

To be considered, candidates need a General Education and Training Certificate (GETC) or Grade 9 (Std 7) as the minimum educational qualification. They must also have appropriate experience in operating a high-volume switchboard. Beyond these formal requirements, the job calls for solid practical knowledge of switchboard systems and a public address system, excellent listening skills, and strong telephone etiquette. Computer literacy in Microsoft packages – specifically Word, Excel and Outlook – is also expected, as the operator will rely on digital directories and communication tools daily.

There are important inherent requirements attached to the post. Because the job depends on verbal communication, the successful applicant must be physically able to hear and speak clearly. The hospital runs around the clock, so the operator must be willing and able to work shifts, including night shifts, weekends and public holidays. This is a permanent appointment within the public service, offering a structured annual salary and service benefits that include a 13th cheque, employer contributions to the pension fund, housing and medical aid allowances. The role is based at Khayelitsha District Hospital, and it provides a stable career opportunity for someone who thrives on dynamic, people-focused work and who wants to contribute to the smooth functioning of a busy public health facility.
