This position offers an opportunity to serve as a Telecom Operator on shift within the Limpopo Department of Health, with one post based at George Masebe Hospital and the other at Siloam Hospital. As a frontline communications link for a healthcare facility, the role is essential to maintaining smooth contact between hospital departments, patients, visitors, and external service providers. The successful candidates will work shifts, which includes after-hours duties and being on call, reflecting the round-the-clock nature of hospital operations.

To be considered, applicants must hold a National Senior Certificate, Grade 12, or an equivalent NQF level 4 qualification recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). A call centre qualification will be an added advantage. Practical computer literacy is required, specifically in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as familiarity with virtual meeting platforms. Candidates must also possess a sound understanding of the Batho Pele Principles, demonstrate excellent telephone etiquette, and be able to communicate effectively, present information clearly, maintain sound interpersonal relations, and write reports. These skills are fundamental in a hospital environment where accurate message transmission and courteous interaction with callers can have a direct impact on patient care and service delivery.

The core duties of the Telecom Operator include receiving and directing incoming telephone calls, making outgoing calls as required, and keeping accurate records of call activities. The role also involves noting down messages and ensuring they reach the intended recipients promptly, as well as reporting faulty telephone lines for repairs. This requires a high level of organisational ability, attention to detail, and the capacity to remain composed under pressure. The department expects operators to exercise discretion and professionalism, particularly when handling sensitive or urgent clinical communications.

Applicants should be prepared for a thorough recruitment process. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interviews and will need to bring certified copies of their qualifications, a copy of their identity document, and, where applicable, proof of registration with relevant statutory bodies. All shortlisted candidates, including for non-SMS posts, will undertake pre-entry assessments, which include a practical exercise and an integrity (ethical conduct) assessment. Successful candidates will also be subjected to personnel suitability checks, including verification of criminal records, citizenship, and credit records. Those with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by SAQA and provide proof of evaluation. The department requires full compliance with the application instructions, including the completion of the Z83 form, and any application that does not meet the conditions may be disqualified. This role suits meticulous, service-oriented individuals who can work flexible hours and thrive in a structured public health environment.
