Iziko Museums of South Africa, an organisation dedicated to celebrating and preserving the nation's diverse heritage, is seeking two Technical Assistants to join its Research and Exhibition Department, specifically within the Cenozoic Palaeontology section. These are fixed-term contract positions, initially for five months with the possibility of extension depending on available funding. The role is central to supporting the museum's fossil collections, which document the history of life on Earth, and contributes directly to Iziko's mission of empowerment and education through heritage.

The successful candidates will hold at least a Grade 12 qualification or equivalent, though a Bachelor of Science degree is ideal. Substantial prior experience as a research technician, whether in Cenozoic palaeontology or with other fossil collections, is highly desirable. Basic practical experience is required in working with museum collections, conducting fieldwork on palaeontological and archaeological sites, sorting fossils, and using computers for data entry and management. The role demands strong abilities in sorting and classifying fossil specimens, working efficiently, accurately and neatly, and functioning effectively within a team. A solid knowledge of the history of life on Earth, good communication and presentation skills, and computer literacy in the MS Office Suite are essential. A valid driver's licence is preferable, given the fieldwork requirements.

Key responsibilities include assisting with the development and conservation of the Iziko Cenozoic fossil collections. This involves sorting and identifying fossils, as well as participating in fossil excavations in the field, which may require up to five days at a time. The role also entails capturing specimen information onto a database, organising and maintaining the fossil collections, and supporting exhibition and education programmes when required. These duties require a combination of technical skill, patience and endurance, as well as strong planning and organisational abilities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate ownership of their work, integrity, stress tolerance, adaptability, and a commitment to building and maintaining positive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders. Thinking skills and a professional approach to technical work are also essential, alongside the ability to communicate clearly and work collaboratively.

Iziko is an equal opportunity employer committed to developing a diverse workforce, and preference will be given to candidates who promote representivity in line with the Employment Equity Act. The museum offers a supportive working environment with benefits including contributions towards a compulsory retirement fund, voluntary medical aid and housing subsidies, as well as generous leave and working conditions. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted, and Iziko reserves the right not to fill the positions. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual with a passion for palaeontology and heritage to contribute to meaningful scientific and educational work within a leading African museum.
