SARS is looking for a dedicated, hardworking and technically competent individual to join its security team as a Team Member: Technical Security. This role is central to keeping SARS facilities safe and operationally resilient by supporting the installation, maintenance, repair and reliable performance of electronic security systems. The successful candidate will work across access control, CCTV and video surveillance, and alarm systems, making sure these systems function correctly and meet the organisation’s technical standards and security risk mitigation requirements. The position involves both existing security infrastructure and future modernised platforms, so the incumbent must be comfortable working with current systems while also supporting the transition to newer technology.
To be considered, applicants need a Higher Certificate at NQF 5 in Information Technology, Electronic Security Systems, Security Technology, Security Risk Management or a related technical or security discipline, together with at least two years of practical experience in installing, maintaining, fault-finding or supporting electronic security systems. Alternatively, a Higher Certificate at NQF 4 in one of those fields combined with three years of relevant practical experience will also be accepted. A valid driver’s licence is required. Practical experience must include access control, CCTV or video surveillance, and alarm systems, along with the ability to work on low-voltage security wiring, power supplies, backup power, door hardware, magnetic locks, readers, controllers, alarm panels, detectors, cameras and DVR or NVR equipment. A basic understanding of IP-based security systems is also important, including TCP/IP networking, Power over Ethernet, switches, IP addressing, remote connectivity and the integration of CCTV, access control and alarm platforms. The ability to read wiring diagrams, site layouts, system drawings and equipment manuals is essential, as is the accurate completion of job cards, maintenance reports and asset documentation. Experience with Softcon Access Control, Adpro and TeleEye CCTV, and CellSecure alarm systems will be an advantage, as will product training or experience with Milestone VMS, Hikvision IP cameras, Impro access control and Ajax alarm systems, particularly in support of SARS’s security systems modernisation programme.
The main duties are broad and hands-on. The incumbent will plan and carry out preventative and reactive maintenance on electronic security equipment, perform system wiring and installations according to SARS standards, and conduct quality assurance inspections on new project installations. They will also oversee the maintenance of the workshop, vehicles, tools and safety equipment, and prepare and submit reports and statistics on equipment faults for the Physical Security Dashboard. The role requires effective planning and scheduling of own activities, timely reporting, and the ability to identify and resolve queries and problems, escalating unresolved issues to management. The incumbent will also contribute to improving standards, procedures and processes, support change initiatives, and ensure contracted performance objectives are met. Mentoring student graduates or interns is also part of the role, helping to build capability within the team.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate sound technical judgement, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently under operational pressure while maintaining professional service delivery. Personal accountability, analytical thinking, continuous learning, integrity, organisational awareness, respect and the ability to work with others are all important. The role also calls for business knowledge, data collection and analysis, efficiency improvements, knowledge of functional policies and procedures, planning and organising, quality orientation, reporting and strong technical ability. This is a role for someone who takes pride in keeping security systems reliable and who can respond effectively to both routine maintenance and urgent technical failures that could affect site security or operational continuity.
