This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the smooth functioning of the Western Cape Government’s Department of Infrastructure as a Stores Assistant, specifically supporting supply chain management and fleet administration operations in Bellville. The role sits within a provincial department responsible for infrastructure delivery and maintenance, and the incumbent will play a practical, hands-on part in ensuring that stores, stock, fuel, and related resources are managed accurately and safely. This is an entry-level, operational post suited to individuals who are organised, methodical, and comfortable working with physical stock and basic administrative systems.

To be considered, applicants must have at least Grade 9 or an NQF level 1 qualification, or an equivalent higher qualification. Beyond formal schooling, the role demands a solid working knowledge of basic storekeeping and stock control procedures, including receiving, recording, safeguarding, and issuing stock. Familiarity with inventory control and stocktaking processes, record management and filing procedures, Occupational Health and Safety requirements, and asset management principles is essential. The job also requires specific knowledge of the safe handling and storage of fuel, lubricants, and chemicals, reflecting the fleet administration component of the role. In terms of skills, candidates should be numerate and literate, possess basic computer literacy, and be capable of operating equipment and handling stock. Good communication, stock control record-keeping, interpersonal and teamwork abilities, as well as organising and planning skills, are all important for success in this environment.

The main duties are centred on stores administration and inventory record management. This includes maintaining accurate records of stock movements, ensuring that all receipts and issues are properly documented, and keeping the stores area organised and secure. The role also involves day-to-day stores operations, such as receiving deliveries, checking quantities and quality, storing items correctly, and conducting regular stocktakes to reconcile physical stock with records. Safekeeping of all items is a key responsibility, along with managing fuel and consumables, which requires careful attention to safety protocols and accurate usage tracking. In addition, the post provides operational support and assists with asset management, helping to ensure that departmental assets are properly recorded, maintained, and accounted for.

Applicants should note that the selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department, and all shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo vetting and submit the necessary supporting documentation within a specified timeframe. Reference checks will be conducted, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving previous employment. Only online applications are accepted, and candidates must ensure their submissions are received before the closing date, as late applications will not be considered. Those who are not contacted within ten weeks of the closing date should regard their application as unsuccessful. This is a supportive, detail-focused role within a large government department, offering valuable experience in supply chain, stores management, and fleet administration.
