This managerial vacancy is for a Station Manager (Rescue) within the Emergency Medical Services Rescue Services component of the provincial Department of Health, based in the Overberg District. The post falls under the Emergency and Clinical Services Support directorate and is graded at levels 3 to 6, meaning appointment can be made at the rank that corresponds to the candidate’s professional registration and experience. The role carries substantive operational and administrative responsibility for ensuring that rescue services in the geographic area are delivered effectively, safely and in line with departmental protocols.
Applicants must meet grade-specific educational and registration requirements. For Grade 3, a candidate must have successfully completed the Immediate Life Support course that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Ambulance Emergency Assistant. For Grade 4, the Emergency Care Technician course and registration as an ECT are required. Grade 5 requires the Critical Care Assistant course or a National Diploma leading to registration as a Paramedic, while Grade 6 requires a B-Tech degree and registration as an Emergency Care Practitioner. In every case, a minimum of three years’ experience after registration with the HPCSA is essential. The post also has inherent requirements, including a valid Code C1 driver’s licence, a Code 10 professional driver’s permit, physical and mental fitness as an emergency services practitioner, current professional registration, and completion of the 12 Rescue Technician Modules. Competencies expected include excellent knowledge of all 12 rescue modules and emergency care rescue protocols, good communication and interpersonal skills, computer literacy in MS Office, and solid report writing ability.
The Station Manager will manage pre-hospital emergency medical rescue services within the district and respond to incidents when required. Key responsibilities include ensuring the maintenance of emergency rescue vehicles and equipment is handled efficiently and effectively, and taking responsibility for audit compliance with regard to Supply Chain Management and Human Resource matters. This includes managing the station’s budget allocation and facilitating account payments for goods and services. The role also involves supervising and managing staff in relation to human resource and labour relations functions, ensuring effective communication through meetings, workshops, debriefs, and the compilation of statistics and reports. The incumbent will provide effective support to the District Manager and act in a management capacity when required.
This is a challenging leadership position suited to experienced rescue practitioners seeking to move into formal operational management within the public emergency medical services environment. As with all public service posts, no payment of any kind is required when applying. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain high standards of service delivery, compliance and team leadership across the Overberg District’s rescue services.
