This vacancy is for a State Accountant specialising in management accounting, based at the department’s Head Office in Pretoria. The successful candidate will join the finance team responsible for the full cycle of public sector budgeting and cash flow management. The role is central to ensuring that the department plans and executes its budget in line with legislative requirements and government-wide financial systems. It involves both hands-on accounting work and supervisory responsibilities, making it suitable for a finance professional with a solid grounding in government financial management and a readiness to guide junior staff.
To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate National Diploma in Government Accounting, Cost Accounting or a related field at NQF Level 6, recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority, together with at least one year of practical experience in finance, specifically in a budgeting environment. The role demands a thorough working knowledge of the Public Finance Management Act, Treasury Regulations, and the department’s own policies and procedures. Familiarity with the transversal systems used across government, such as BAS, Safetyweb and Vulindlela, is essential, as is a sound understanding of financial administration and management accounting principles. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate strong financial and accounting skills, clear written and verbal communication, business letter and report writing ability, computer literacy, and a problem-solving, innovative approach. In addition, the post requires good management, organisational and project management skills, with the mental agility to handle numeric data, staff and budget structures, and the complexities of government budget processes.
The main duties revolve around the annual budget cycle. The State Accountant will collate financial supporting information for the annual budget planning process, including the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and the Estimates of National Expenditure. During the in-year budget process, the incumbent will prepare and capture budget information accurately and timeously. Cash flow management is another key responsibility, involving the preparation of drawings and monitoring expenditure against the National Revenue Fund. The post also carries supervisory functions, meaning the incumbent will oversee the work of more junior finance staff, ensuring outputs are correct and deadlines are met.
The department encourages male applicants from all racial groups—African, Indian, Coloured and White—to apply, in line with its employment equity objectives. This is a Pretoria-based position, and the successful candidate will be expected to work within the department’s established financial governance framework. Enquiries are directed to the named contact person, and applications are submitted via the departmental email address as specified in the circular. This is an excellent opportunity for a finance professional with government budgeting experience to take on a supervisory role and contribute to sound financial management in the public sector.
