This position offers an opportunity for qualified nursing professionals to join the dedicated team at Karl Bremer Hospital, working within the Metro Health Services directorate in the Western Cape. The successful candidates will be appointed as Staff Nurses at one of three grades, depending on their level of post-registration experience, and will be deployed across both the theatre complex and general ward settings. This is a permanent, OSD-graded post within the public health sector, and three vacancies are available, making it an excellent chance for nurses at different stages of their careers to contribute to a busy hospital environment.

Applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Staff Nurse, and they must be registered with the SANC in that capacity. For appointment at Grade 1, no prior nursing experience is required, making this an ideal entry point for newly qualified staff nurses. Grade 2 applicants must have at least ten years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration, while Grade 3 applicants need a minimum of twenty years of such experience. In addition to these formal requirements, candidates must be willing to rotate to other wards when the need arises, and they must be available to work night duty, weekends, public holidays, and overtime as part of the operational requirements of the hospital.

The core duties of the role revolve around delivering safe, compassionate, and effective nursing care. Staff nurses will be responsible for developing and implementing basic patient care plans, ensuring that each patient’s individual needs are assessed and addressed. They will provide basic clinical nursing care, which includes monitoring patients, administering medication, assisting with procedures, and supporting patients and their families throughout their stay. In the theatre setting, this involves preparing patients for surgery, assisting the surgical team, and maintaining a sterile environment, while in the general ward, the focus is on holistic patient management and recovery. The role also requires the effective utilisation of physical and financial resources, meaning that staff nurses must be conscientious about the use of equipment, supplies, and time to ensure the smooth running of the unit. Furthermore, the position demands a commitment to maintaining professional growth, ethical standards, and continuous self-development, in line with the values of the Department of Health.

Candidates should possess sound knowledge of nursing care processes and the ability to function effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential for interacting with patients, relatives, and colleagues. The hospital environment is dynamic and demanding, so adaptability, reliability, and a patient-centred approach are important attributes. It is also worth noting that no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post, and applicants are encouraged to ensure they meet the registration and experience criteria before submitting their application. This is a rewarding opportunity for nurses who are passionate about public healthcare and wish to develop their skills in both theatre and general ward nursing within a supportive institutional framework.
