STAFF NURSE GRADE 1 TO 3 (PAEDS GROUND AND PAEDS OPD)

This position offers an opportunity for registered staff nurses to join the paediatric wards at George Regional Hospital within the Rural Health Services directorate. The role is specifically based in the Paeds Ground and Paeds OPD (outpatient department) units, providing basic clinical nursing care to children in both inpatient and outpatient settings. As a staff nurse, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team delivering patient-centred care in a regional hospital environment. The post is graded at Staff Nurse levels 1 to 3, meaning appointment may be made at any of these grades depending on the candidate’s years of relevant nursing experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).

To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the SANC as a Staff Nurse, and must be registered with the SANC in that capacity. For appointment at Grade 1, no prior nursing experience is required after registration. For Grade 2, at least ten years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Staff Nurse is needed. For Grade 3, a minimum of twenty years of such experience is required. Inherent to the job is the willingness to work shifts, including night duty, weekends, public holidays, and overtime, and the expectation that the incumbent will rotate within the hospital as operational needs demand. The ideal candidate should possess sound knowledge of nursing processes and procedures as outlined in the Nursing Act and SANC regulations, including aseptic technique, wound dressing, basic pharmacology and mathematical skills for medication dosage calculations, basic principles of health education, knowledge of the nursing care process, and awareness of medical legal hazards. Strong professionalism, interpersonal communication, responsiveness, proactiveness, flexibility, assertiveness, and supportive leadership skills are also required.

The main duties involve the development and implementation of basic patient care, providing basic clinical nursing care, ensuring effective utilisation of physical and financial resources, and maintaining professional growth, ethical standards, and self-development. This includes direct patient interactions in a paediatric setting, supporting the care team, and contributing to a safe, compassionate environment for children and their families.

Notably, applicants who do not yet possess the required registration may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration to the relevant council and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category, including those needing a change in registration status.
