This position is for a qualified social worker to join the Department of Social Development within the Western Cape Government, with two vacancies available at service points in Kraaifontein and Somerset West. The role sits within the Social Work Services unit and is an OSD-graded post, meaning appointment and progression are determined by the Occupation Specific Dispensation applicable to social work professionals. The successful candidates will be expected to deliver a comprehensive social work service aimed at the care, support, protection and development of vulnerable individuals, groups, families and communities across the specified areas.

Applicants must hold a relevant tertiary qualification in Social Work, specifically a Bachelor of Social Work, and must be registered with the South African Council for Social Service Professions as a Social Worker. The post is advertised across four grades, with entry-level Grade 1 requiring no prior experience, while higher grades demand a minimum of 10, 20 or 30 years of appropriate experience in social work after registration, respectively. Beyond formal qualifications, the department seeks candidates with a strong working knowledge of the Supervision Framework for Social Workers, human behaviour and social systems, social work theory and interventions, information and knowledge management, professional ethics, relevant legislation and norms, and social dynamics. Essential skills include the ability to challenge structural sources of poverty, inequality, oppression and exclusion; strong written and verbal communication; report-writing; self-management; planning and organising; problem-solving and analytical thinking; computer literacy; presentation and facilitation; and a client-oriented approach. The role also requires the capacity to assist, develop, advocate for and empower individuals, families, groups, organisations and communities, as well as to protect those who are vulnerable, at risk or unable to protect themselves. More experienced appointees will be expected to mentor and coach Grade 1 social workers.

The core duties involve rendering social work services through case work, group work and community work, with a focus on care, support, protection and developmental programmes. Practitioners must also attend to any matters that could result in or stem from social instability, supervise and support Social Auxiliary Workers, engage in continuous professional development, stay abreast of developments in the social work and welfare fields, and perform all administrative functions associated with the job. This is a demanding but rewarding role for professionals committed to public service and social justice.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend interviews at a time determined by the department and must submit completed vetting and supporting documentation within the communicated timeframe. Failure to do so without reasonable justification may result in exclusion from the process. All shortlisted applicants will undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment measuring ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department, and by applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers for references, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. Applications are accepted only through the online portal, and technical support is available during business hours for those experiencing difficulties. Late applications will not be considered, so interested social workers should ensure their submissions are completed well before the closing date.
