The role is an OSD-graded post, meaning remuneration is determined according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation applicable to social service professions. Working under the guidance and supervision of qualified social workers, the incumbent will play a supportive yet vital role in the delivery of developmental social welfare services to vulnerable individuals, groups, families and communities. To be considered for this post, applicants must have a Grade 10 certificate and must have completed the Social Auxiliary Worker learnership that enables registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) as a Social Auxiliary Worker. Current registration with the SACSSP is a firm requirement. The role demands a sound basic understanding of human behaviour, relationship systems and social issues, as well as knowledge of the South African social welfare context, including the policy and practice of developmental social welfare. Familiarity with the South African judicial system and legislation affecting social auxiliary work is also necessary, along with the ability to apply appropriate methods and techniques to address client needs. Basic financial knowledge, the appropriate use of resources in service delivery, accurate record-keeping and reporting, and adherence to professional ethics and protocol are all expected. Strong skills in written and verbal communication, computer literacy, organising and planning, presentation and facilitation, report writing, problem solving, analytical thinking, and client orientation are essential. The ability to work effectively with social workers and multi-sectoral teams is a key part of the role.

The main duties include providing assistance and support to social workers in rendering services related to the care, support, protection and development of vulnerable individuals, groups, families and communities through departmental programmes. The post holder will also assist social workers in attending to any other matters that could result from or contribute to social instability. Continuous professional development is a requirement, as is performing administrative support functions in support of social workers as required by the job.

Shortlisted candidates should note that they will be required to attend interviews on a date and time determined by the department, and must submit duly completed and signed vetting and supporting documentation within the timeframe communicated prior to the interview. Failure to do so without reasonable justification may result in exclusion from the process. All shortlisted candidates will also undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to determine suitability based on technical and generic requirements, and an integrity assessment relating to ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the employing department. By applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers or managers for employment references, including checks on disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. Applications must be submitted before the closing date, as late submissions will not be considered.
