This position offers an opportunity for a skilled accounting professional to contribute to the financial integrity of a national government department. Based at the Head Office in Pretoria, the Senior State Accountant for Financial Reporting operates within the department’s finance unit, where the core focus is on producing accurate and timely financial statements that comply with the prescripts governing national departments. The role is central to ensuring that the department’s financial records reflect a true and fair view of its operations, and it carries a supervisory component that requires guiding and managing staff within the financial reporting sub-section.
To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification at NQF level 6, as recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority, in fields such as Accounting, Cost and Management Accounting, Financial Management, or Internal Audit. In addition, at least two years of functional experience in a finance or accounting environment is required. The role demands a solid working knowledge of departmental policies and procedures, Batho Pele principles, and the financial regulations and delegation of authority that govern public sector financial management. Practical familiarity with the Basic Accounting System (BAS) is essential, while basic knowledge of PERSAL and LOGIS is also expected. A strong understanding of Treasury Regulations and the specific guidelines and prescripts for financial reporting by national departments is critical. On the technical side, candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, and possess well-developed skills in writing, accounting, communication, analysis, planning, organisation, innovation, and problem-solving.
The main duties involve ensuring the correct allocation of expenditure, revenue, assets, and liabilities across the department’s financial records. The incumbent will be responsible for accurately preparing and timeously submitting the department’s financial statements, a task that requires meticulous attention to detail and strict adherence to reporting deadlines. Supervision of staff in the sub-section is another key responsibility, meaning the successful candidate must be able to lead, coordinate, and review the work of team members to maintain high standards of accuracy and compliance. This combination of technical accounting work and team oversight makes the role both challenging and rewarding for a professional looking to advance within the public service finance environment.
As with many public service vacancies, this post is subject to employment equity targets. In line with the department’s affirmative action measures, priority will be given to Coloured males and females, Indian males and females, and White males. Interested candidates should note that the post is advertised through the Public Service Vacancy Circular, and all application instructions, including the relevant reference number and closing date, are provided in the full advertisement. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified accountant with public sector experience to take on a position of responsibility in financial reporting and staff supervision.
