This position offers an opportunity for a skilled accounting professional to join the Financial Accounting directorate within the Western Cape provincial government, based at the Head Office in Cape Town. As a Senior State Accountant, the successful candidate will play a central role in the preparation and oversight of financial reporting, with a strong focus on the compilation of interim and annual financial statements. The role sits within a team responsible for ensuring compliance with accounting standards and providing expert guidance on complex accounting matters, making it a key function in maintaining the integrity and transparency of public sector financial management.

To be considered for this post, applicants must hold an appropriate National Diploma at NQF level 6 or equivalent qualification in Accounting or Auditing, or another relevant qualification that includes Financial Accounting III as a subject. In addition, the role requires appropriate experience in an accounting environment, specifically with the preparation of financial statements. Practical experience in compiling financial statements is essential, along with advanced computer literacy in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel spreadsheets, Word document drafting, and PowerPoint presentations. The successful candidate will also need strong analytical and presentation skills, as well as working experience with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and/or International Standards on Auditing. Knowledge of the Modified Cash Standard (MCS) and/or Generally Recognised Accounting Practice (GRAP) standards is also required. A valid code B or EB driver’s licence and a willingness to travel are inherent requirements of the job.

The duties of the post are broad and demanding. The Senior State Accountant will be responsible for the overall assessment of the Annual Financial Statements template and the analysis of the Modified Cash Standard. This includes compiling interim and annual financial statements and assisting with the implementation of and compliance with disclosure notes inputs for the Annual Financial Statements. The role also involves providing guidance and advice on accounting issues related to the Annual Financial Statements, as well as researching, analysing, and compiling implementation plans for new or revised accounting standards. Monthly and quarterly disclosure and financial reporting compliance forms a regular part of the work, alongside the research, analysis, and interpretation of accounting information. Project management and supervisory functions are also key components, meaning the post holder will be expected to oversee work streams and support junior staff within the unit.

This is a permanent post graded under the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD), offering a competitive salary within the advertised band. Short-listed candidates may be required to undergo a computer literacy test and deliver a presentation as part of the evaluation process, so practical proficiency and the ability to communicate technical material clearly are important. The department is committed to employment equity and encourages suitably qualified candidates from designated groups to apply. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this post, and all applications must be submitted online through the official Western Cape government jobs portal. This is an excellent opportunity for a finance professional with strong technical accounting skills and a desire to contribute to sound public financial governance.
