This position offers an opportunity for an experienced law enforcement professional to serve as a Senior Provincial Inspector within the Directorate Traffic Law Enforcement of the Western Cape Mobility Department. Based in the Western Cape, the role is part of a broader provincial inspectorate team and carries significant responsibility for enforcing road traffic, public passenger transport, and related legislation across the province. The post is graded at Level 07 and is available at various locations, with multiple vacancies to be filled. The successful candidate will be expected to operate with a high degree of independence, provide visible policing, and contribute to crime prevention activities while ensuring compliance with vehicle fitness and roadworthiness standards.
Applicants must hold a Senior Certificate or equivalent higher qualification, together with a basic traffic diploma or equivalent. A minimum of three years of practical experience as a provincial inspector is required, along with a valid Code B/EB driving licence or higher. Importantly, people with disabilities that restrict driving abilities but who have reasonable access to transport are also encouraged to apply. A clean criminal record is essential. The role demands a thorough working knowledge of several key legal frameworks, including the National Road Traffic Act, the National Road Traffic Amendment Act, the Firearms Control Act, the Criminal Procedure Act, and the relevant regulations. Familiarity with dimensional and mass limitations for abnormal loads, impoundment procedures, dangerous goods storage and transportation, and labour relations legislation is also expected. Candidates should be proficient in using information systems, managing projects, performing legal administration, and applying performance management processes.
The core duties are broad and operationally focused. The Senior Provincial Inspector will enforce road traffic, public passenger, and transport legislation; examine vehicles and monitor compliance with fitness and roadworthiness requirements; and provide visible traffic control and policing to promote crime prevention. Administrative responsibilities include completing traffic law enforcement documentation, managing equipment, and assessing road conditions. The role also carries a supervisory element, requiring the post holder to mentor and coach provincial inspectors on probation as well as appointed inspectors, and to perform general supervisory functions. Strong leadership, conflict management, problem-solving, and communication skills are therefore vital. The ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, travel regularly away from the office, and work irregular hours when required is essential.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend interviews and submit vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe. All shortlisted candidates must also complete two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment relating to ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department. By applying, candidates consent to employment references being sought from previous employers, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a demanding but rewarding role for those committed to public safety and effective law enforcement administration.
