A provincial government department in Limpopo is seeking a Senior Information Technology Technician to join its Head Office in Polokwane. This single vacancy sits within the departmental ICT unit and is responsible for keeping the organisation’s end-user computing, server infrastructure, and network services stable, secure, and responsive. The role is well suited to an experienced IT professional who can work independently as well as collaboratively, combining hands-on technical support with broader project and infrastructure work. The position forms part of the department’s ongoing efforts to maintain a reliable technology environment that supports public service delivery.
Applicants must have Grade 12 plus an appropriate qualification at NQF level 6 in Computer Science, Information Technology, or an equivalent field recognised by SAQA. A minimum of two to three years of relevant experience is required, along with a valid motor vehicle driver’s licence, although the licence requirement is waived for persons with disabilities. The role calls for a good working knowledge of Microsoft Windows desktop and server environments, including Microsoft 365, as well as a solid understanding of network infrastructure such as LAN/WAN, TCP/IP, routing, switching, and Wi-Fi. Familiarity with Active Directory, user account administration, and Group Policy is essential, together with the ability to install, configure, and troubleshoot hardware and software. The department also expects knowledge of cybersecurity best practices and IT service management, supported by strong problem-solving, analytical, communication, and customer-service skills.
The duties are broad and practical. The technician will provide day-to-day technical support to end users on hardware, software, and network-related incidents, and will install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot servers, desktops, laptops, printers, and peripheral devices. Network support is a central part of the role, including maintaining switches, routers, Wi-Fi, and structured cabling, as well as monitoring LAN performance and availability. The incumbent will administer user accounts, permissions, and access on both Active Directory and the Microsoft 365 tenant, and will support and monitor ICT systems, servers, endpoint protection, and backup solutions. Routine system maintenance, applying approved updates and patches, performing data backups, and supporting disaster recovery are also key responsibilities. In addition, the post involves assisting with ICT projects and infrastructure upgrades, and implementing network security controls such as VLAN configuration, access control lists, and segmentation to protect departmental data and resources.
Candidates should note the conditions attached to the post. Shortlisted applicants will be subjected to security clearance, verification of qualifications, and a personnel suitability check. They will also be required to complete two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and one integrity assessment. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. The department’s employment decision will be informed by its Employment Equity Plan, and the department reserves the right not to make an appointment. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and those who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful. This is a demanding but rewarding opportunity for a skilled IT technician looking to contribute to the effective functioning of a provincial government department.
