This Johannesburg-based position, located within the Corporate Services branch of a Gauteng provincial department, is central to the smooth operation and delivery of the Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) programme. The Senior Administrator Officer acts as the organisational engine of the sub-directorate, shaping how wellness initiatives are communicated, scheduled, and implemented across the department. Working from the Head Office, this role is deeply people-focused, combining administrative rigour with a genuine commitment to improving employee wellbeing, and it supports a broad range of activities from healthy lifestyle campaigns to policy development. The post also forms part of the branch’s broader corporate services mandate, ensuring that all health and wellness efforts align with public service regulations and departmental priorities.

Candidates must hold an NQF level 6 national diploma or an NQF level 7 bachelor’s degree in behavioural or social science, social work, or psychology. A minimum of two to three years of relevant experience in health and wellness, or in gender, youth and disability management, is essential. The role requires a strong working knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Public Service Regulations, Employment Equity Act, Labour Relations Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act, COIDA and OHSA, as well as familiarity with the National Strategic Plan on Employee Health and Wellness and the Millennium Development Goals. An understanding of customer expectations, service level agreements, management information systems, and the political and executive structures of Gauteng’s provincial government is also required. In addition, the successful candidate must bring well-developed skills in change management, planning and organising, strategy and policy development, project management, financial management, and a people-centred approach to supervising and mentoring staff.

The day-to-day duties are varied and demanding. The officer will raise employee awareness on healthy lifestyles through emails, newsletters, articles, pamphlets and information brochures, while also organising workshops and information-sharing sessions guided by the health calendar. They will facilitate the sports and recreation programme, and handle all logistical arrangements, including booking boardrooms, catering, and managing attendance registers. The role includes coordinating life skills coaching and mentorship programmes delivered by wellness specialists, as well as providing secretariat services to wellness committees such as the wellness coordinator committee, peer educators committees, and sports and recreation committees. Administrative support to EHW contractors is another key area, covering claims, invoices, payments, record-keeping, and the management of all purchasing receipts. Beyond this, the officer manages transport, accommodation, and venue bookings for the sub-directorate, keeps minutes of meetings, contributes to the drafting and updating of EHW policies, and facilitates workshops on those policies. Supervision, mentoring and coaching of admin officers and interns is expected, as is providing administrative support for office equipment, office allocation, and assistive devices.

This is a senior administrative post with benefits, and it is subject to the department’s commitment to employment equity. Preference will be given to persons with disabilities, Coloured females, Indian females and White females in line with the departmental Employment Equity Plan. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undertake assessments, and foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA. Applicants should note that only online applications submitted with the prescribed forms and a comprehensive CV will be considered, and that no response within three months indicates an unsuccessful outcome.
