This role is a Senior Administrative Officer providing support services to the Mental Health Review Board, situated within the Assurance component of a specialised hospital directorate in the Western Cape Government’s Department of Health. Based at the Head Office in Cape Town, the incumbent will be responsible for the technical and logistical coordination that enables the Board to function effectively. The Mental Health Review Board operates under the Mental Health Care Act, and this position is central to ensuring that its administrative, information management and resource allocation functions run smoothly. The role requires a high degree of independence, client orientation and the ability to liaise with a range of mental health care professionals and organisations across the province.

Candidates must possess an appropriate three-year National Diploma or Degree in administration, procurement, business, health or an equivalent field. In addition, they need appropriate experience in general office administration or business management, as well as specific experience in health administration. A valid unendorsed Code B or EB driver’s licence is an inherent requirement, along with a willingness to travel throughout the Western Cape. The role demands excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills, strong writing and grammatical abilities for editing and formulating documents, and the capacity to work independently with confidence. The successful candidate will also need sound knowledge of the functions and duties of the Provincial Government Western Cape, the Mental Health Care Act 17 of 2002 and its regulations, and related prescripts such as the PFMA, PAIA, POPIA, Public Service Act and Regulations, National Archives Act, Batho Pele Principles and the Patients’ Rights Charter. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Office365, as well as experience in creating and maintaining databases, is essential.

The main duties include providing technical and logistical support to the Mental Health Review Board through effective coordination of its functions and services. This involves communication, liaison and training to mental health care professionals, document coordinators and other organisations. The officer will implement, develop and maintain information management systems to ensure accurate data capturing and reporting, and will also manage allocated resources. These duties require a task-oriented approach, good team building skills both within and outside the Board, and a commitment to client service.

This is an OSD-graded position within the public service, and the post is subject to the usual employment checks and conditions. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this post, and applications are submitted online through the Western Cape Government health jobs portal. The position offers an opportunity to contribute to the oversight and protection of mental health care users’ rights within a provincial government framework.
