This position offers an opportunity to contribute directly to public safety oversight within the Western Cape Government, specifically within the Police Oversight and Community Safety department. As a Senior Administrative Officer focused on Safety Planning, the role sits at the heart of the provincial Policing Needs and Priorities programme, a key initiative that helps determine how policing resources and community safety efforts are aligned with local realities. The work is both administrative and strategic, requiring a blend of research, project coordination, stakeholder engagement, and internal management support. The successful candidate will help ensure that the department’s safety planning functions are well-organised, evidence-based, and responsive to the needs of communities across the province.
To be considered, applicants need a qualification at NQF level 6 or higher, together with at least three years of relevant working experience. The role demands a broad working knowledge of legislation, regulatory frameworks, and best practices affecting public safety and oversight functions. Familiarity with information systems for knowledge management, project management, operational management, procurement and tendering processes, and policy development is essential. A solid understanding of public service procedures, modern governance systems, and the constitutional and legal arrangements governing the South African public sector is also required. In addition, the role calls for awareness of regional and local political, economic, and social affairs impacting the Western Cape, as well as knowledge of public finance, human resources, and discourse management processes. Specific familiarity with the Public Finance Management Act, Treasury regulations, labour relations legislation, and performance management practices is expected. Strong computer literacy in the MS Office package, excellent written and verbal communication, strategic planning, facilitation, problem-solving, report writing, negotiation, and monitoring and evaluation skills are all important. The ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team is equally vital.
The core duties involve providing support for office records and information management to enable effective service delivery. The role also includes administrative, research, and project implementation support for the Policing Needs and Priorities programme, along with advocacy activities related to that programme. Additionally, the position carries managerial and supervisory responsibilities, meaning the post holder will be expected to guide and oversee certain functions or staff within the unit.
Shortlisted candidates should be prepared for a rigorous selection process. This includes attending interviews, completing two pre-entry assessments—one practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and one integrity assessment focused on ethical conduct. Candidates must also submit duly completed vetting and supporting documentation within the timeframe given by the department. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the employing department, and applicants consent to reference checks with previous employers, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a demanding but rewarding role for a skilled administrator who is passionate about contributing to safer communities through effective safety planning and oversight.
