This position offers an opportunity for an experienced audit professional to join the Gauteng Audit Services directorate as a Senior Administration Officer specialising in performance auditing. The role is based in Johannesburg and forms part of the broader provincial government audit function, focusing on reviewing the performance of Gauteng Provincial Government departments. As one of five available posts, the successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring that public entities operate effectively, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable legislation and internal control frameworks.
Applicants must hold a three-year tertiary qualification at NQF level 6 in Auditing, Accounting, or Financial Management, together with two to three years of practical experience within a performance audit environment. A valid driver’s licence is essential. The role also demands a sound working knowledge of departmental policies and procedures, the Public Finance Management Act, Treasury Regulations, DPSA frameworks, and the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing (IIA Standards). This combination of formal education and practical auditing exposure is necessary to plan, execute, and report on complex performance audit engagements.
The core responsibilities involve conducting performance audit reviews for provincial departments, which includes preparing, coordinating, and facilitating audit plans. The officer will participate in developing the annual audit plan through stakeholder consultations focusing on risk, and will be expected to design detailed engagement plans that outline audit objectives, scope, methodology, and resource allocation. Prior to the commencement of an audit, the incumbent must assist in identifying key risks, symptoms of potential problems, control weaknesses, and areas requiring improvement. The role also requires preparing agendas and attendance registers for contact meetings and steering committees within stipulated timeframes after receiving the signed engagement letter. In addition, the officer will gather background information, analyse Annual Performance Plans, operational plans, and budgets, document system descriptions, and conduct walk-through tests to understand processes thoroughly.
The audit execution phase involves preparing audit programmes with clearly defined audit procedures, signing off planning documents, and updating the TeamMate audit management system. All work must be conducted in full compliance with the Gauteng Audit Services performance audit methodology. After completing the audit fieldwork, the officer is responsible for reporting and communicating findings on the audit projects conducted. The position also includes providing support and advisory services to client departments, helping them understand and improve their internal controls and performance management practices, alongside general administrative duties related to the audit function.
This is an OSD-graded government position with associated benefits. It is important to note that the department encourages applications from youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups, specifically Coloured, Indian, and white applicants, in line with equity targets. A confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany applications where applicable. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise and one integrity-based ethical conduct assessment. Successful candidates will also be subject to personnel suitability checks, including vetting, criminal record verification, citizenship verification, credit record checks, and qualification and employment verification. The department reserves the right not to fill the post, and placement will depend on departmental needs and corridor coordination. Applicants with foreign qualifications must ensure their qualifications are evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. Given the high volume of applications, correspondence will only be directed to shortlisted candidates, and those who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should regard their application as unsuccessful.
