The Department of Correctional Services is advertising two security manager posts at the basic training level, known as CB4, based at the Kroonstad Training College and the Zonderwater Training College. This role is a senior supervisory position within a correctional training environment, tasked with overseeing the delivery of foundational training and development programmes for correctional officials. The successful candidate will play a central part in ensuring that new personnel receive proper instructional learning, workplace exposure and assessment within the framework of the Correctional Services Act. It is a demanding position that combines education and training oversight with custodial management responsibilities, and it requires a professional who can balance the demands of classroom facilitation with the realities of a secure correctional environment.
Candidates must possess a relevant degree or National Diploma at NQF level 6 in Behavioural Sciences, along with successful completion of the Corrections Science Learnership or Basic Training. At least seven years of relevant experience in a supervisory post at CB3 level is required. An additional advantage is registration and accreditation as an assessor and moderator. Practical requirements include computer literacy and a valid driver's licence, with a willingness to travel. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a range of competencies such as financial management, facilitation and presentation, planning and organising, project management, conflict management, report writing, coaching and mentoring, and time management. Strong leadership capabilities are essential, including the ability to lead a team, manage change, and control resources. The department values personal attributes such as confidentiality, integrity, honesty, assertiveness, networking ability, strategic thinking, and a strong client-service orientation, as well as an understanding of public service policies and legislative frameworks.
The core duties involve supervising the delivery of instructional and experiential learning, managing the facilitation of presentations and the administration of classes within the correctional environment. The manager will also prepare and oversee assessments, ensuring that all processes comply with standards. In addition, the role requires supervising custodial duties, ensuring safe and secure detention, the rehabilitation process, and humane incarceration within correctional or remand detention facilities. The position also includes managing performance information, as well as human resources, finance, and assets. This is a comprehensive management role that requires both educational expertise and correctional operations knowledge.
These posts are explicitly appointed under the Correctional Services Act, meaning that the successful candidates will be subject to the applicable legal and employment frameworks of the Department of Correctional Services. The vacancy is part of the department's broader recruitment drive and is advertised through the Public Service Vacancy Circular. Interested applicants are encouraged to ensure they meet all the requirements before applying, as the selection process will be rigorous. The department is looking for ethical, physically fit and resilient individuals who can uphold the values of the correctional system while developing future security leaders.
