This position is for a Scientist at Production Level within the Department of Agriculture, Western Cape Government, based at Elsenburg. The role focuses on the specialised fields of breeding and reproduction, as well as animal housing and welfare, placing the incumbent at the heart of the department’s agricultural research and regulatory functions. As a production-level scientist, the post holder is expected to operate with a high degree of professional independence, contributing both to the scientific knowledge base and to the practical application of animal science within the provincial agricultural sector. The role is an OSD-graded position, reflecting its professional status and the level of expertise required.
To be considered, applicants must hold a BSc (Agric) or BSc (Hons) degree in Animal Science, along with compulsory registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Professional Natural Scientist. A minimum of three years of post-qualification natural scientific experience is required, as is a valid Code B driving licence. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong working knowledge of research and development, computer-aided scientific applications, legal compliance, technical report writing, data analysis, and scientific methodologies. Additional competencies include professional judgement, mentoring, programme and project management, and the ability to foster a high-performance culture. The role demands a broad skill set, including decision-making, team leadership, analytical thinking, creativity, self-management, financial management, customer focus, communication, computer literacy, networking, people management, planning and organising, conflict management, change management, and problem solving.
The core duties of the position are varied and substantial. The scientist will be responsible for developing and implementing methodologies, policies, systems, and procedures related to breeding, reproduction, and animal welfare. This includes performing scientific analysis and carrying out regulatory functions to ensure compliance with relevant standards. Research and development form a central part of the role, requiring the scientist to design and conduct studies, interpret findings, and translate them into practical recommendations. Human capital development is also a key responsibility, meaning the post holder will be expected to mentor and support less experienced colleagues, contributing to the overall capacity of the unit.
Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process is thorough. Those invited to interview will need to submit duly completed and signed vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe, and failure to do so may result in exclusion from the process. All shortlisted candidates will also undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability for the post, and one integrity assessment focusing on ethical conduct. Reference checks will be conducted, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving previous employment. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department, and by applying, candidates consent to these checks. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified animal scientist seeking to apply their expertise within a government research and regulatory environment.
