This position is for a Scientific Technician at production level, based at the Riviersonderend Tygerhoek facility within the Western Cape Government’s Department of Agriculture. The role centres on soil, plant and water interaction, supporting research projects that aim to develop more efficient and sustainable farming practices. The successful candidate will work within a technical scientific environment, contributing to field trials and research infrastructure while helping to generate knowledge that benefits the agricultural sector, particularly in the context of Western Cape small grain crops and climate-smart agriculture.
Applicants must hold a National Diploma in Soil Science or an equivalent qualification, and compulsory registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Certificated Natural Scientist in the appropriate field is required. In addition, at least three years of post-qualification technical scientific experience is expected, along with a valid driving licence. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of soil science research trials, the major small grain crops grown in the Western Cape, local soil types, and climate-smart agricultural practices. Practical knowledge of setting up, calibrating and performing basic maintenance on relevant equipment and implements is essential, as is familiarity with the technical scientific inputs needed for field research trials and general farm work related to research. Strong technical planning skills, computer literacy in the MS Office package, and effective written and verbal communication are also required. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is important for this role.
The main duties include rendering technical assistance in research projects aimed at improving farming practices, administering the creation, adaptation and maintenance of necessary infrastructure according to project plans, and performing all related administrative functions. The technician will also be expected to render advice and disseminate technical information to relevant role players, and to stay current with applicable prescripts, policies, procedures, technologies and new developments in the subject field. This means the role is both hands-on in the field and involved in documentation, coordination and knowledge sharing.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend interviews on a date determined by the department and must submit duly completed and signed vetting and supporting documentation within the specified timeframe. Failure to do so without reasonable justification may result in exclusion from the process. All shortlisted candidates will also undertake two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to determine suitability based on the post’s technical and generic requirements, and an integrity assessment relating to ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the employing department. By applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers or managers for employment references, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a production-level scientific technician post, so the work is technical and research-oriented, requiring both practical and administrative competence.
