This position is for a Scientific Technician at production level, specialising in breeding, reproduction, and animal housing and welfare, based in Oudtshoorn within the Western Cape Government’s Department of Agriculture. The role forms part of the department’s technical scientific workforce and is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) for natural scientists. The incumbent will work within an agricultural research and development environment, contributing to the scientific and operational functions that support livestock production and animal science initiatives in the province. This is a hands-on technical role that requires both practical experience in animal production and a strong theoretical grounding in animal science.

To be considered, applicants must hold a National Diploma or Degree in Animal Science, or an equivalent qualification in animal production at NQF level 6. Compulsory registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Certificated Natural Scientist in Animal Science is required, along with at least three years of post-qualification technical scientific experience in livestock. A valid Code B driving licence is also essential. The ideal candidate will bring a broad range of competencies, including knowledge of research and development, computer-aided scientific applications, legal compliance, technical report writing, data analysis, mentoring, programme and project management, and scientific methodologies. Strong skills in decision making, team leadership, analytical thinking, creativity, self-management, financial management, customer focus, communication, computer literacy, networking, people management, planning and organising, conflict and change management, and problem solving are also expected.

The core duties of the role involve developing and implementing methodologies, policies, systems and procedures related to animal breeding, reproduction, housing and welfare. The technician will provide technical support and advice to internal and external stakeholders, perform technical scientific analysis and regulatory functions, and contribute to research and development projects. Human capital development is another key responsibility, meaning the post holder may be involved in mentoring and guiding junior staff or students within the scientific environment. The work is varied and requires a balance of laboratory or field-based scientific analysis, administrative and compliance duties, and collaborative engagement with other professionals.

Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process includes interviews, the submission of vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe, and two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability for the post, and one integrity assessment focused on ethical conduct. The recruitment process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department, and by applying, candidates consent to reference checks with previous employers, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a career opportunity for a registered natural scientist seeking to apply their expertise in a government agricultural setting, with a focus on improving animal production and welfare through sound scientific practice.
