This position offers an exciting opportunity for a qualified agricultural scientist to contribute to livestock science research within KwaZulu-Natal’s provincial government. As a Scientific Technician at Grade A, B, or C, the successful candidates will be based at either the Kokstad Research Station or the Cedara Research Station, playing a vital role in supporting the department’s agricultural research services. The role is an OSD-graded technical post, meaning that appointment and progression follow the Occupation Specific Dispensation for scientific technicians, with the specific grade determined by the candidate’s experience and qualifications. The work centres on advancing livestock science through practical research, technical support, and the development of sound methodologies that inform agricultural policy and practice across the province.
To be considered, applicants must hold an NQF Level 06 Diploma in Agricultural Sciences and be registered with SACNASP as a Certificated Natural Scientist. A valid driver’s licence is essential, as fieldwork and travel between research sites are likely. Candidates need at least three years of post-qualification experience in an agricultural scientific environment. The role demands a thorough understanding of agricultural research methodologies and livestock science practices, as well as familiarity with key legislative and regulatory frameworks including the Labour Relations Act, Public Service Act, Public Service Regulations, the Directive on Human Resources Management and Development for Public Service Professionalisation, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, and departmental HRM and HRD policies. Strong technical skills are required, including analytical and data analysis abilities, scientific methodology and modelling, research and development, technical report writing, programme and project management, computer-aided scientific applications, professional judgement, policy development and analysis, livestock husbandry, and legal compliance. Generic competencies such as planning and organising, leadership, mentorship, financial management, team leadership, self-management, analytical thinking, problem solving, and creativity are also essential.
The core duties involve developing and implementing methodologies, policies, systems, and procedures for livestock science research. The technician will provide technical support and advice to researchers and stakeholders, perform technical scientific analysis and regulatory functions, and contribute to research and development initiatives. Human capital development is another key responsibility, meaning the role includes mentoring and developing junior staff or students within the research environment. This is a hands-on scientific post that combines laboratory or field-based technical work with administrative and policy-related tasks.
Notably, this is a two-post vacancy, with one position at Kokstad Research Station and one at Cedara Research Station. The department is committed to employment equity, and these posts may be subject to equity targets, so candidates from designated groups are encouraged to apply. Shortlisted applicants will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability for the post, and an integrity assessment measuring ethical conduct. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. The application process requires careful attention to the prescribed Z83 form and a comprehensive CV, and only shortlisted candidates will need to submit certified copies of documents. If no feedback is received within three months after the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. This is a rewarding career opportunity for a dedicated scientific professional looking to make a meaningful impact in agricultural research and livestock development in the public sector.
