This position offers an opportunity for a qualified agricultural scientist to contribute to grassland and forage research at the Cedara Research Station, operating within the broader public service agricultural scientific environment. As a Scientific Technician graded at A, B, or C under the Occupation Specific Dispensation, the incumbent will be part of a specialised unit dedicated to grass and forage scientific research services. The role is technical and hands-on, requiring a blend of practical field and laboratory work, regulatory compliance, and support to broader research and development initiatives. The successful candidate will work within a departmental framework that prioritises scientific integrity, legal compliance, and the professional development of human capital.

To be considered, applicants must hold an NQF Level 06 Diploma in Agricultural Sciences and be registered with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions as a Certificated Natural Scientist. A valid driver’s licence is compulsory, as fieldwork and site visits are likely. Candidates need at least three years of post-qualification experience in an agricultural scientific environment. The role demands a solid understanding of scientific methodologies, research and development processes, and legal compliance, including familiarity with the Labour Relations Act, Public Service Act and Regulations, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, and departmental HRM and HRD policies. Knowledge of the Grassland Society of Southern Africa is also expected, reflecting the specialised nature of the work. Technical skills required include programme and project management, computer-aided scientific applications, technical report writing, data analysis, mentoring, and professional judgement. Generic competencies such as decision-making, team leadership, analytical thinking, creativity, self-management, financial management, customer focus, communication, networking, people management, planning, conflict management, change management, and problem-solving are equally important.

The core duties are multifaceted. The technician will develop and implement methodologies, policies, systems, and procedures to support the unit’s scientific work. This includes providing technical support and advice to colleagues, stakeholders, and possibly external clients. The role also involves performing technical scientific analyses and carrying out regulatory functions, ensuring that all activities align with relevant legislation and departmental standards. Research and development form a central part of the position, meaning the incumbent will contribute to experimental design, data collection, analysis, and the translation of findings into practical recommendations for grass and forage management. Human capital development is another key responsibility, which may involve mentoring junior staff, assisting with training, and fostering a high-performance culture within the team.

This is a public service post, and applicants should be aware of the associated conditions. The selection process may include pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, for shortlisted candidates. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. The post is based at Cedara Research Station, and the role is graded according to the OSD system. This summary serves as a comprehensive overview of the position, its requirements, and its responsibilities, providing prospective applicants with the essential information needed to determine their suitability before applying.
