The Road Works Foreman positions offer an opportunity to join the Mpumalanga provincial government’s road infrastructure team, with four posts available across different locations in the Bohlabela and Gert Sibande regions. Working under the broader public works and roads department, the successful candidates will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of road construction and maintenance activities, ensuring that projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with relevant legislation. This is a hands-on supervisory role that requires a blend of technical road-building knowledge, staff management ability and a strong commitment to workplace safety.
To be considered, applicants must have a Grade 12 certificate and at least three years of practical experience in road work maintenance. A recognised Road Work Course will be an added advantage. A valid driver’s licence is essential. The ideal candidate will also possess knowledge of the legislative prescripts governing the public service, computer literacy, and well-developed organisational and problem-solving skills. Good interpersonal relations are important, as the role involves directing and working with teams of road workers and liaising with other stakeholders.
The core duties of the Road Works Foreman include supervising road construction and maintenance work from start to finish, managing the use of equipment on site, and enforcing safety procedures and controls. The foreman is also expected to oversee on-site training to ensure that workers are properly skilled and aware of safe practices. Compliance with all relevant legislation and departmental policies is a key responsibility, as is the efficient utilisation and management of staff. In addition, the foreman must maintain a system of worker performance management, ensuring that productivity and quality standards are met and that any performance issues are addressed appropriately.
As with all public service positions, the recruitment process is thorough. Only applications submitted through the provincial e-recruitment portal before the closing date will be considered. Shortlisted candidates will be required to produce certified copies of their documents and, where applicable, a SAQA evaluation of foreign qualifications. They will also need to disclose any business interests or additional remunerative work. The selection process may include practical and integrity assessments, and the top candidates will undergo personnel suitability checks, including criminal record, citizenship, financial and qualification verification. The successful candidate will be required to enter into an annual performance agreement and disclose financial interests. The department reserves the right not to fill the posts, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If no feedback is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. These posts are graded at Level 05 and offer a stable career within the provincial government.
