The Mpumalanga Provincial Government is advertising seven Road Worker vacancies within its Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport, spread across several district municipalities. These positions are based in Gert Sibande District at Albert Luthuli and Mkhondo, in Nkangala District at Morete, Steve Tshwete and Thembisile (where two posts are available), and in Ehlanzeni District at Mbombela. As an entry-level post graded at salary level 03, this role is ideal for individuals who are physically fit, reliable and eager to contribute to the maintenance and safety of the province’s road network. Road Workers form part of the departmental maintenance teams that ensure roads remain passable, safe and well-maintained for all road users, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where routine upkeep is essential.
To be considered for this position, applicants must hold a Grade 10 certificate. No prior work experience is required, making this an excellent opportunity for school leavers and those seeking to enter the public service. The department is looking for candidates who possess knowledge of occupational health and safety practices, as the work is performed in and around active roadways where caution is critical. Good listening and communication skills are also necessary, as road workers must follow instructions accurately and coordinate with team members. In addition, the role demands good interpersonal relations, since the work is carried out in a team environment and road workers may interact with members of the public while performing their duties.
The core duties of a Road Worker are practical and hands-on. Responsibilities include rendering patch work to repair damaged road surfaces, clearing bush and vegetation that encroaches onto roadways, erecting road signs to guide motorists and warn of hazards, cleaning drainage systems to prevent water accumulation and flooding, and removing rubbish and debris from the road surface and verges. Beyond these specific tasks, road workers are expected to execute any other activities related to road maintenance as and when required by supervisors. This may include assisting with emergency repairs, supporting maintenance crews during special projects, and ensuring that tools and equipment are used safely and kept in good condition.
Applicants should note that all applications must be submitted online through the provincial e-Recruitment portal, and no manual, emailed or faxed applications will be accepted. Only shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified documents, and those with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by SAQA. Candidates must also disclose any business interests with the state or additional remunerative work. The department reserves the right not to appoint, and communication will be limited to shortlisted candidates. If no feedback is received within three months after the closing date, applicants should consider their applications unsuccessful. Successful candidates will be required to enter into an annual performance agreement and disclose their financial interests annually. These posts offer a stable career path within the public service for individuals committed to infrastructure maintenance and community safety.
