This position offers an opportunity to contribute directly to the maintenance and safety of Mpumalanga’s road network as a Road Operator. Three posts are available, based in the Ehlanzeni District at Driekoppies and in the Nkangala District at Thembisile Hani and Victor Khanye. The role sits within the provincial department responsible for public works and road infrastructure, and successful candidates will be expected to operate specialised plant and machinery used in the upkeep of gravel roads and road shoulders. This is a hands-on, technically focused role that requires a strong commitment to occupational health and safety, as well as the ability to work reliably both independently and as part of a road maintenance team.

To be considered, applicants must have a Grade 10 certificate, which equates to NQF Level 3, together with the appropriate plant operator certificate for the equipment to be used. A valid driver’s licence Code EC is also required, as the role involves operating heavy machinery and vehicles. An Occupational Health and Safety certificate for the specific equipment will be an added advantage. Beyond formal qualifications, the department is looking for candidates with sound knowledge of occupational health and safety practices, good listening and communication skills, and strong interpersonal relations. Previous experience in operating specialised equipment is essential, as the duties are practical and demand a level of familiarity with machinery handling and routine maintenance.

The core duties of the Road Operator include operating specialised equipment safely and efficiently, loading and offloading goods and equipment, and conducting regular inspections of machinery to identify and report defects. The role also involves keeping accurate log sheets for vehicles and machinery, applying safety and precautionary measures at all times, and performing cleaning and lubrication of equipment to keep it in good working order. A significant part of the work is dedicated to the grading of gravel roads, re-graveling, and shoulder maintenance, which are critical activities for preserving road quality and ensuring the safety of road users in the province.

Applicants should note that this is a government position with a structured recruitment process. Applications must be submitted online through the provincial e-recruitment portal, and no manual, emailed, or faxed applications will be accepted. Only shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified documents, and those with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by SAQA. Shortlisted candidates must be available for interviews and may be subjected to practical and integrity assessments, as well as personnel suitability checks including criminal record, citizenship, financial assets, qualifications, and reference verification. The successful candidate will be required to enter into an annual performance agreement and disclose financial interests. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If no feedback is received within three months after the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced plant operators seeking stable employment in the public sector while contributing to essential road infrastructure services.
