This position offers a five-year contract as a Registrar in Otorhinolaryngology at Tygerberg Hospital in Parow Valley, providing a structured training opportunity within a major academic health complex. The role is designed for a medical practitioner who wishes to specialise in ear, nose and throat surgery while contributing to a busy clinical service. Registrars are appointed to a specific training complex but may be required to work across the broader health platform as part of an agreed programme, and secondment or transfer to another institution may become necessary during the training period, with consultation before any decision is implemented. The post is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation, and the package may be structured to suit individual needs.

Candidates must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Practitioner in Independent Practice. A valid code B/EB driver’s licence is an inherent requirement, and commuted overtime is compulsory, as is emergency and after-hour call cover. Applicants should ideally have passed FCS Part 1 and possess experience in research or publications, along with appropriate clinical experience in general surgery and/or ENT surgery. Effective leadership and interpersonal skills are essential, as the role involves supervising and teaching junior staff. There is also a concession for applicants who do not yet have the stipulated registration, provided they submit proof of application for registration and payment of the prescribed fees before the interview, but this applies only to first-time registration in the specific category.

The core duties revolve around the provision of safe surgical care to patients, including peri-operative management and participation in intensive care management of surgical patients. The registrar will learn the art and science of ENT surgery through hands-on clinical work, tutorials, and structured training, while also assisting with the training of interns, medical students, nursing staff, and paramedics. On-site after-hours duties are required for the care of newly arriving acute patients as well as inpatients. Involvement in research and audits relating to ENT is expected, supporting the academic mission of the department.

Registrars must register as post-graduate students with Stellenbosch University in line with the university’s yearbook and guidelines. Should registration with the higher education institution be discontinued for any reason, the registrar appointment will also cease. Existing employees already on higher salary packages may retain their current salary position and remain entitled to pay progression. Employees in service who continue with pension benefits as registrars will be required to resign after completing the registrarship if they are not successful in securing advertised specialist posts. The Department of Health follows Employment Equity principles, and candidates with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Certain registrar posts are identified as part of the Affirmative Action programme to build a representative specialist cadre. Preference is given to South African citizens or permanent residents with a valid identity document. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this post.
