This position offers four opportunities for a qualified medical practitioner to join Groote Schuur Hospital in Observatory as a Registrar in the Internal Medicine department, on a four-year contract. Working within one of South Africa’s major teaching hospitals, the successful candidate will form part of a structured specialist training platform. The department has adopted an ecosystem approach to its training programme, meaning that registrars appointed to this post should be prepared to work across the broader platform as required. This may include rotations at Metro West and Rural East hospitals, such as Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, New Somerset Hospital, Mitchells Plain District Hospital, Victoria Hospital and George Provincial Hospital. The role is designed to support the development of a representative specialist cadre, in line with the Department of Health’s employment equity principles, and candidates with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Practitioner, and must be registered with the HPCSA in Independent Practice. Candidates who do not yet have the required registration may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration and proof of payment of the prescribed fees on or before the day of the interview; this concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category. The role demands sufficient and appropriate clinical experience gained since obtaining the MBChB degree and after completing internal medicine rotations. Post community service experience in Internal Medicine on an equivalent clinical platform is required, as is knowledge and expertise in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of both inpatients and outpatients. Applicants should also have passed FCP(SA) Part 1, possess effective leadership and interpersonal skills, and ideally demonstrate previous research experience and publication output.
The core duties include clinical service provision across the wards and outpatient settings, effective clinical administration of patient records and reports, active participation in the teaching programme, and a commitment to research and professional development, including completion of an MMED. Commuted overtime is compulsory, and registrars must be available for emergency and after-hours call cover. Each appointee is assigned to a specific training complex but may be required to work across the platform on request.
Registrars will be expected to register as postgraduate students with the University of the Western Cape in line with the applicable yearbook and guidelines; should this university registration be discontinued for any reason, the registrar appointment will also discontinue. The contract period is a maximum of four years. Existing departmental employees who are appointed and choose to continue their pension benefits as registrars will be required to resign after completing their registrarship if they are not successful in securing advertised specialist positions. Applicants must also indicate whether they have any bursary obligations. Preference will be given to South African citizens or permanent residents with a valid identity document. No payment of any kind is required when applying, and an updated CV must be attached to the application.
