REGIONAL COURT PROSECUTOR

The National Prosecutions Service is seeking a Regional Court Prosecutor to be stationed at Thohoyandou (Waterval). This role is central to the work of the Court Procedures and Prosecutions unit, where the incumbent will act on behalf of the State in the regional court. The position is a senior prosecutorial appointment within a graded salary structure, offering a total cost-to-company package. The successful candidate will be expected to manage a demanding caseload, provide legal direction, and uphold the professional standards of the NPA.

Applicants must hold an LLB degree, although serving prosecutors seeking promotion may present any appropriate legal qualification. A minimum of four years of post-qualification legal experience is required, together with demonstrable competence in acting independently, professionally, accountably and with credibility. The role demands a high level of proficiency in prosecution and litigation, including the ability to guide investigations, present and argue cases in court, and give instructions on law and statutory offences at regional court level. Strong interpersonal, analytical, presentation and project management skills are essential, as is a valid driver's licence.

The core duties include studying case dockets, deciding whether to institute criminal proceedings, and conducting those proceedings on behalf of the State. The prosecutor will draft charge sheets and other legal documents, represent the State in all courts, lead witnesses, cross-examine opposing witnesses, and address the court on conviction and sentence. In addition to court work, the position carries general administrative responsibilities and requires the prosecutor to promote partner integration, community involvement and customer satisfaction together with other role players in the criminal justice system. All work must be performed in accordance with the NPA's Code of Conduct, policies and directives.

Successful candidates will undergo a security clearance, with appointment made provisionally pending that clearance. Fingerprints will be taken at interview, and the NPA may review shortlisted applicants' social media accounts as part of verification. Shortlisted candidates, including those at SMS level, must complete pre-entry assessments covering practical and integrity components, while SMS posts carry additional requirements such as a lifestyle audit, psychometric testing and the National School of Government's SMS pre-entry certificate for Public Service Act positions. The NPA does not meet resettlement costs, and late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Those who do not receive an acknowledgement within a week after the closing date may contact the NPA, but should otherwise accept that their application was unsuccessful if no response arrives within six months.
