REGIONAL COURT PROSECUTOR National Prosecutions Service

This vacancy offers an opportunity for a legally qualified professional to serve as a Regional Court Prosecutor within the National Prosecutions Service, a component of the National Prosecuting Authority. The positions are based at the offices of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Butterworth, covering the Engcobo area, and in Upington, covering Kuruman, with two posts available at the latter location. This is an OSD-graded role within the prosecutorial career path, offering a total cost-to-company package that reflects the seniority and responsibility of the position. The successful incumbent will operate within the criminal justice system, working to ensure that prosecutions are conducted effectively, ethically, and in accordance with the legal framework governing the NPA.

Candidates must hold an LLB degree, although serving prosecutors seeking promotion may present any appropriate legal qualification. A minimum of four years of post-qualification legal experience is required, along with demonstrable competency in acting independently, professionally, accountably, and with credibility. The role demands the ability to work with minimal supervision, as well as proven experience in guiding investigations and providing instructions on law and statutory offences at the regional court level. Strong interpersonal, analytical, and presentation skills are essential, as is sound project management capability. A valid driver's licence is a mandatory requirement for this position.

The core duties of the role are wide-ranging and central to the functioning of the regional court system. The prosecutor will be responsible for studying case dockets and making decisions on whether to institute criminal proceedings, as well as conducting those proceedings on behalf of the State. This includes drafting charge sheets and other legal documents, representing the State in all courts, leading witnesses, cross-examining opposing witnesses, and addressing the court on matters relating to conviction and sentence. Beyond the courtroom, the incumbent will perform general administrative duties of the office and will be expected to promote partner integration, community involvement, and customer satisfaction in conjunction with other role players in the criminal justice system. All duties must be carried out in accordance with the Code of Conduct, policies, and directives of the National Prosecuting Authority.

Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. Successful candidates will be subjected to a security clearance of at least confidential level, and appointment will be provisional pending the outcome of that clearance. Shortlisted candidates will also undertake pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment. The NPA reserves the right not to fill the position, and applicants who have not received feedback within six months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.
