The Department of Community Safety in Braamfontein is seeking a Receptionist to join its Provincial Secretariat, providing essential front-of-house and administrative support to the office of the executive authority. This role serves as the first point of contact for both callers and visitors, ensuring that communication flows smoothly between the public and the department. The incumbent will be responsible for receiving telephonic calls, taking accurate messages and routing them to the appropriate officials, as well as welcoming clients and directing them to the executive’s office. In addition, the receptionist will provide relevant information as required, operate office equipment such as fax machines and photocopiers, and liaise with both internal and external personnel. A key part of the job is managing the executive authority’s diary, compiling schedules of appointments and maintaining the visitor register, so sound organizational skills are essential to keeping the office running efficiently.
Candidates must hold at least an NQF level 4 qualification, and no prior work experience is required, making this an excellent entry-level opportunity within the public service. However, applicants must have no criminal record or any pending cases against them. The role demands computer literacy, good people skills, basic written communication abilities, and a strong client orientation with customer focus. Professional telephone etiquette and the capacity to handle multiple tasks in a busy office environment are equally important. Since the receptionist is often the first person a visitor meets, a welcoming and composed manner is vital.
The department has set out several important conditions for applicants. The standard application process involves completing the new Z83 form and submitting it with an updated CV; only shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide certified copies of qualifications, and those with foreign qualifications must include a SAQA evaluation certificate. Shortlisted applicants will be required to undertake two pre-entry assessments, one practical and one integrity-based, and will also undergo personnel suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship, credit history, qualifications and employment verification. The department actively encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from coloured, Indian and white population groups to apply, with a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner required where applicable. Applications must be submitted through the prescribed channels, as posted, emailed or hand-delivered applications will not be accepted. Due to the high volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted; if no response is received within three months after the closing date, applicants should assume their application was unsuccessful. The department reserves the right not to fill the post or to use alternative recruitment processes.
