This position offers a career opportunity for qualified diagnostic radiographers to join the Metro Health Services team at Victoria Hospital, a public sector facility within the Western Cape Department of Health. The role is structured as a professional clinical post within the hospital’s radiology unit, where the successful candidate will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive radiographic service to patients. The vacancy is advertised across three grades, allowing applicants with varying levels of post-registration experience to be considered, from newly qualified professionals to those with two decades or more of service. Appointment to a specific grade will depend on the candidate’s years of relevant experience after registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Diagnostic Radiographer.

To be eligible, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that permits registration with the HPCSA as a Radiographer in Diagnostic Radiography, and they must be registered as such. For Grade 1, no post-registration experience is required for South African qualified employees, while foreign qualified applicants who are exempt from community service need at least one year of relevant experience. Grade 2 requires a minimum of ten years of relevant experience for locally qualified radiographers, or eleven years for foreign qualified applicants. Grade 3 demands twenty years of experience for South African qualified employees, or twenty-one years for foreign qualified applicants. The post also carries inherent requirements, including the ability to render a 40-hour service as determined by the department, and participation in an after-hours service roster.

The core duties involve providing a full radiographic service, producing high-quality diagnostic images, ensuring optimal patient care, and using and caring for equipment safely. Accurate record keeping is essential, as is assisting with the training of community service radiographers and students. The role also requires participation in continuing professional development activities to maintain and enhance professional competence. Candidates should possess sound knowledge of imaging protocols, radiation protection, quality assurance, and equipment safety. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team are important, as is familiarity with Patient Archiving and Communication Systems and Radiology Information Systems.

Applicants who do not yet hold the stipulated registration may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration with the HPCSA and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees with their application or on appointment. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category, including those who must apply for a change in registration status. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. The position is based at Victoria Hospital, and enquiries may be directed to the contact person listed in the advertisement. This is an excellent opportunity for radiographers seeking a stable public sector career with clear grading progression based on experience.
