This permanent diagnostic radiographer post is based at the Lotus River Community Day Centre under the Chief Directorate: Metro Health Services, and offers appointment at Grade 1, Grade 2 or Grade 3 level depending on the candidate’s experience. The role is part of the wider public health ecosystem, meaning that although the primary workplace is the community health centre, the successful appointee may be required to render clinical services at other facilities within the ecosystem as needed to sustain service delivery. It is an OSD-graded position, with the usual associated service benefits such as a 13th cheque, pension fund contributions, and allowances for housing and medical aid.
Candidates must hold an appropriate qualification in Diagnostic Radiography that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), and must be registered with the HPCSA as a Diagnostic Radiographer. A valid driver’s licence is an inherent requirement of the job. The experience required depends on the grade applied for. For Grade 1, locally qualified employees need no post-registration experience, while foreign-qualified applicants who are exempt from community service need at least one year of relevant post-registration experience. Grade 2 requires a minimum of ten years’ relevant experience after registration for RSA qualified employees, or eleven years for foreign-qualified applicants in the same exemption category. Grade 3 requires twenty years for RSA qualified employees, or twenty-one years for foreign-qualified applicants. Importantly, candidates who do not yet have the stipulated registration may still apply, but they must submit proof of application for registration with the HPCSA and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees on or before the interview date; this concession applies only to health professionals registering for the first time in a specific category.
The core duties involve rendering comprehensive radiography services at the community health centre and other facilities, producing high-quality diagnostic images, and ensuring the smooth running of the radiography service. The radiographer will deliver a professional service to patients, apply radiation protection measures, and carry out quality assurance procedures. Administration tasks are also part of the role, as is participation in the training of students when required. The ideal candidate should have sound knowledge of imaging protocols, radiation protection, quality assurance and equipment safety, together with computer literacy in MS Windows, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as the role requires interacting with patients, working independently and functioning effectively within a multi-disciplinary team. Reliability, articulateness and an excellent work ethic are also expected.
Shortlisted candidates will be assessed through written, practical and oral assessments. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. This opportunity suits qualified diagnostic radiographers who are committed to public health service and are willing to work flexibly across facilities in the ecosystem as service needs arise.
