This position offers an opportunity for a qualified clinical psychologist to contribute to the public service at the Seshego Treatment Centre, a facility operating under the provincial department. The successful candidate will function as a Psychologist Grade 1, providing essential psychological services within a multidisciplinary team. The role is situated in a treatment environment that deals with child and youth care, and the incumbent will be expected to apply clinical expertise across the full spectrum of assessment, diagnosis, and therapeutic intervention. The work is demanding but rewarding, requiring both independent clinical judgement and close collaboration with medical and health professionals, as well as sensitivity to the broader community, cultural, and socio-economic factors that affect mental health.
To be considered for this post, applicants must hold Grade 12 and an appropriate qualification at NQF Level 7 in Social Science that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Clinical Psychologist. Current registration with the HPCSA as a Psychologist is a non-negotiable requirement. A valid motor vehicle driver’s licence is also required, although an exception is made for persons with disabilities. Beyond the formal qualifications, the department seeks candidates with strong core and process competencies, including strategic capability, programme and project management, change management, financial management, people management, knowledge management, problem-solving, and client orientation. The ideal candidate will possess sound psychotherapeutic and clinical knowledge, an understanding of the ethical and legislative framework of practice, familiarity with departmental guidelines and policies, and a commitment to evidence-based psychological practice. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, good organisational and time-management abilities, and the capacity to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team are essential. Sensitivity to gender, racial, ethnic, sexuality, and disability issues is also a key attribute.
The duties attached to this post are varied and clinically focused. The psychologist will perform medical case assessments and coordinate the referral process for obtaining medical opinions, while also assisting in monitoring and supporting the adjudication process. The role requires the preparation of detailed reports and ongoing liaison with medical and health professionals. Participation in the after-hours clinical call roster is expected, and the incumbent will be responsible for the management of the child and youth care information management system. This combination of assessment, coordination, reporting, and direct clinical involvement ensures that the psychologist plays a central part in the treatment centre’s operations and in the broader care pathway for clients.
Applicants should note that this is an OSD-graded position with an all-inclusive remuneration package. The department is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, and women and people living with disabilities are encouraged to apply. The employment decision will be informed by the department’s Employment Equity Plan. All shortlisted candidates will be subjected to security clearance, verification of qualifications, and two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to determine suitability based on technical and generic requirements, and an integrity assessment. The recommended candidate will also undergo a personnel suitability check. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Applications must be submitted through the prescribed e-recruitment system, accompanied by the new Z83 form and a comprehensive CV, and shortlisted candidates will be required to present certified copies of their identity document, Grade 12 certificate, and qualifications on or before the interview date. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates. Those who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful, and any dissatisfaction may be addressed in terms of the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act. Candidates attending interviews are responsible for their own transport, accommodation, and meal costs.
