This vacancy is for two Provincial Inspector posts within the Directorate Traffic Management, stationed in the Croesus Region. Provincial Inspectors are responsible for the visible enforcement of road traffic, public passenger and transport legislation, ensuring that road users comply with the law and that the province's roads remain safe and efficient. The role is operational in nature and requires a strong commitment to public service, with inspectors expected to work shifts, under pressure, and in potentially hazardous conditions. The successful candidates will become part of a dedicated law enforcement team, contributing to crime prevention through visible policing and specialist traffic operations.
Applicants must hold a Matric Certificate and a Traffic Officer's Diploma, together with a valid driver's licence at least Code B. A minimum of one year of practical experience in traffic law enforcement is required, and candidates must have no criminal record or pending case. The position demands a broad range of skills and knowledge, including sound record and resource management, customer relationship management, and a thorough understanding of road traffic and public transport policies. Familiarity with law enforcement documentation, vehicle inspections and impoundment procedures, the Firearms and Ammunition Act, and departmental guidelines on overload control and escort duties is essential. Strong observation, driving, negotiation, interpersonal, conflict resolution and written and verbal communication skills in at least two provincial official languages are also required.
The main duties are varied and include planning and implementing approved traffic law enforcement activities, controlling traffic at congested areas, managing accident scenes and identifying hazardous locations. Inspectors will participate in traffic policing projects and speed testing operations, issue notices, execute arrests, and present evidence in court. They will also escort abnormal vehicles and loads, and coordinate overload control management for both goods and passenger transport. Further responsibilities involve examining driving licences and motor vehicles, conducting learner and driver licence tests, performing roadworthy tests, and monitoring compliance at Driver Licence Testing Centres and Vehicle Testing Stations. Visible policing and crime prevention are core components, with inspectors assisting motorists, executing escort duties, taking part in roadblocks and special operations, and patrolling roads to warn motorists about dangers. Administrative duties, compliance with the Firearms and Ammunition Act, and participation in human resource development programmes round out the responsibilities.
Applicants should note that the selection process includes pre-entry practical and integrity assessments, and shortlisted candidates will undergo thorough personnel suitability checks, including criminal, credit, qualification and employment verification. The department encourages applications from youth, people with disabilities, coloured, Indian and white candidates, and a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany applications from persons with disabilities. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and if no response is received within three months, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment or to use alternative recruitment processes. Successful candidates will be placed according to corridor coordination and departmental needs. The post is advertised on the new Z83 application form, with a comprehensive CV required, and only shortlisted candidates need to submit certified copies of qualifications. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate, and late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
