The Gauteng Department of Community Safety, through its Traffic Management directorate and the Gauteng Freeway Patrol, is advertising two positions for Provincial Inspectors. These roles are central to the daily operations of traffic law enforcement on the province’s road network, with a strong focus on ensuring the safe and efficient movement of vehicles and passengers. Successful candidates will become part of a dedicated team responsible for upholding road traffic and public transport legislation, contributing to broader crime prevention initiatives, and maintaining a professional and visible policing presence on the roads. The positions are graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) and offer the standard suite of service benefits associated with a public service role.
Applicants must hold a Matric Certificate and a recognised Traffic Officer’s Diploma, along with a valid driver’s licence at least Code B. A minimum of one year of practical experience in traffic law enforcement is required. Importantly, candidates must have no criminal record or any pending case against them. The ideal applicant will demonstrate sound knowledge of road traffic and public transport policies and regulations, as well as familiarity with vehicle inspections, impoundment procedures, and the Firearms and Ammunition Act. Working knowledge of departmental guidelines on overload control and escort duties, as outlined in the Transport Handbook, is also expected. Strong record and resource management skills, customer relationship management abilities, and the capacity to work under pressure are essential. Excellent observation, negotiation, driving, and conflict resolution skills are required, alongside sound interpersonal abilities and effective written and verbal communication in at least two of the provincial official languages.
The duties of the Provincial Inspector are varied and demanding. They include enforcing road traffic, public passenger, and transport legislation through planned and approved law enforcement activities, managing traffic flow at congested points, and safeguarding accident scenes. Inspectors will also identify hazardous locations, participate in traffic policing projects and speed testing operations, issue notices, execute arrests, and attend court proceedings to give evidence. Additional responsibilities involve escorting abnormal vehicles and loads, coordinating overload control management, examining drivers’ licences and motor vehicles, conducting learner and driver licence tests, performing roadworthy tests, and monitoring compliance at Driver Licence Testing Centres and Vehicle Testing Stations. Visible policing is a key part of the role, with duties such as assisting motorists, patrolling dedicated areas, participating in roadblocks, and warning motorists about hazards. Administrative tasks, compliance with operational plans and the Firearms and Ammunition Act, participation in human resource development programmes, and maintaining a professional corporate image complete the scope of the position.
This advertisement is part of an equal opportunity recruitment drive. The Department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from Coloured, Indian, and White population groups to apply, and it notes that a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany the application. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, as well as personnel suitability checks covering criminal, citizenship, credit, qualification, and employment verification. It is also important to note that the Department will not accept posted, emailed, or hand-delivered applications, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If no response is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate, and the Department reserves the right not to fill the posts or to use alternative recruitment processes.
