The Provincial Inspector position within the Traffic Management directorate's Saturation Unit offers an opportunity for an experienced traffic law enforcement professional to contribute to public safety across the province. Operating as part of a dedicated saturation team, the inspector will be responsible for enforcing road traffic, public passenger transport, and related legislation, while also supporting visible policing and crime prevention initiatives. The role demands a strong commitment to service delivery and requires the incumbent to act as a visible, professional representative of the Directorate of Traffic Law Enforcement.

Candidates must hold a Matric certificate and a Traffic Officer's Diploma, together with a valid driver's licence at least code B. The position requires one year of practical experience in traffic law enforcement and a clean record, with no criminal cases pending. The ideal candidate will demonstrate sound knowledge of road traffic and public transport policies, vehicle inspections and impoundment procedures, the Firearms and Ammunition Act, and departmental guidelines on overload control and escort duties. Strong interpersonal, conflict resolution, observation, negotiation, and driving skills are essential, as is the ability to work effectively under pressure. Written and verbal communication in at least two official provincial languages is required, along with effective record and resource management and customer relationship abilities.

The duties are varied and operationally demanding. The inspector will implement approved traffic law enforcement activities, manage traffic flow through point duty and control at congested areas, coordinate accident scenes, identify hazardous locations, and participate in traffic policing projects and speed testing operations. This includes issuing notices, executing arrests, and attending court to give evidence. The role also entails escorting abnormal vehicles and loads, managing overload control, and monitoring compliance at Driver License Testing Centres and Vehicle Testing Stations by conducting learner and driver licence tests and roadworthy tests. Visible policing is a key component, involving roadblocks, special operations, patrols, and warning motorists of dangers. Administrative duties, compliance with the Firearms and Ammunition Act, participation in human resource development programmes, and maintaining a professional corporate image round out the responsibilities.

This post is subject to several conditions. The selection process includes pre-entry practical and integrity assessments for shortlisted candidates, followed by a personnel suitability check covering vetting, criminal and citizenship records, credit checks, and verification of qualifications and employment. Candidates need to apply using the prescribed application form and attach a comprehensive CV; only shortlisted applicants will need certified copies of qualifications, and foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. The department encourages applications from youth, people with disability, and designated groups, with a medical confirmation required for disability. Successful candidates will be placed according to departmental needs and corridor coordination. The department may choose not to fill the post or use alternative recruitment processes, and applications that are incomplete or late will not be considered. If no response is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should regard their application as unsuccessful.
