This position operates as a Provincial Inspector within the Traffic Management directorate of the Department of Community Safety, stationed at the Merafong Region Transport Inspectorate. The role is central to enforcing road traffic, public passenger and transport legislation, contributing to public safety and orderly transport systems. As part of the provincial inspectorate, the incumbent will join a team responsible for both reactive enforcement and proactive safety operations, working in a dynamic environment that combines roadside policing, regulatory compliance, and administrative duties.

To be considered, applicants need a Matric Certificate, a Traffic Officer’s Diploma, and a valid driver’s licence at least code B. At least one year of practical experience in traffic law enforcement is required, along with a clean criminal record with no pending cases. The ideal candidate should possess strong knowledge of road traffic and public transport policies and regulations, vehicle inspection and impoundment procedures, and the Firearms and Ammunition Act. Familiarity with departmental guidelines on overload control and escort duties, as well as the ability to complete law enforcement documentation accurately, is also essential. The job demands good observation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills, sound interpersonal abilities, and the capacity to work under pressure. Written and verbal communication skills in at least two of the province’s official languages are required, as are good customer relationship and resource management abilities.

The duties are broad and hands-on. The inspector will enforce road traffic and public transport legislation by implementing planned law enforcement activities, controlling traffic at congested points, and coordinating activities at accident scenes. They will identify hazardous locations, advise management on safety issues, participate in traffic policing projects and speed testing operations, issue notices, make arrests, and attend court proceedings to give evidence. The role also involves escorting abnormal vehicles and loads, managing overload control for both goods and passengers, and monitoring compliance at Driver License Testing Centres and Vehicle Testing Stations. This includes conducting learner and driver licence tests, performing roadworthy tests, and overseeing these facilities. Visible policing is another key element, with the inspector assisting motorists, executing escort duties, participating in roadblocks and special operations, and patrolling dedicated areas to warn motorists of hazards such as damaged road surfaces or broken-down vehicles. Administrative responsibilities are integral too, including maintaining effective procedures, complying with operational plans and the Firearms and Ammunition Act, participating in human resource development programmes, promoting service delivery, and upholding the professional image of the Directorate.

Applicants should note the position is advertised through the Public Service Vacancy circular and requires a fully completed, signed new Z83 form accompanied by a comprehensive CV. Only shortlisted candidates will need certified copies of qualifications, and foreign qualifications must carry a SAQA evaluation certificate. Shortlisted candidates will undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, with these results forming part of the selection process. A personnel suitability check, including criminal, citizenship, credit, qualification, and employment verification, will also be conducted. The Department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups to apply, and a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany applications from persons with disabilities. The Department reserves the right not to appoint, and placement will depend on corridor coordination and departmental needs. Because applications are not acknowledged, candidates who do not receive feedback within three months should consider their application unsuccessful.
