The Provincial Inspector position sits within the Traffic Management component of Law Enforcement Services in the Merafong Region, and is central to ensuring compliance with road traffic, public passenger and transport legislation. The role requires a disciplined and service-oriented individual who can uphold the law while maintaining professional relations with the public. The successful candidate will operate in a demanding environment that includes high-visibility policing, accident scene coordination, and road safety enforcement, all aimed at reducing hazardous conditions and promoting the safe and efficient movement of traffic and pedestrians.

To be considered, applicants must hold a Matric Certificate and a Traffic Officer's Diploma, as well as a valid driver's licence of at least code B. A minimum of one year of practical experience in traffic law enforcement is required, and candidates must have no criminal record or pending case against them. The position demands a range of specialised knowledge and skills, including sound record and resource management, effective customer relationship management, and a thorough understanding of road traffic and public transport policies and regulations. Candidates should be familiar with completing law enforcement documents, conducting vehicle inspections and impoundments, and applying the provisions of the Firearms and Ammunition Act. Knowledge of departmental guidelines on overload control and escort duties, as set out in the Transport Handbook, is also essential. The ability to work under pressure, strong observation and driving skills, good negotiation and conflict resolution abilities, and sound interpersonal skills are important. In addition, applicants must be able to communicate effectively in at least two of the provincial official languages.

The core duties of the Provincial Inspector are broad and demanding. The role entails enforcing road traffic, public passenger and transport legislation through planned and approved law enforcement activities. This includes ensuring the free flow of traffic through point duty and control at congested areas, coordinating activities and safeguarding accident scenes, and identifying and advising management on hazardous locations. The inspector will participate in traffic policing projects and speed testing operations, issue notices, execute arrests under the relevant Acts and directives, and attend court proceedings to give evidence. Other responsibilities include escorting abnormal vehicles and loads to ensure their safe movement, and coordinating overload control management for both goods and passengers. The position also requires examining driver's licences and motor vehicles, conducting learner and driver licence tests, performing roadworthy tests, and monitoring compliance at Driver Licence Testing Centres and Vehicle Testing Stations. In addition, the inspector must provide visible traffic policing and support crime prevention by assisting motorists, participating in roadblocks and special operations, patrolling roads, and warning motorists of hazards such as damaged road surfaces or broken-down vehicles. Administrative duties include maintaining effective procedures, complying with the Firearm and Ammunition Act, following operational plans, taking part in human resource development programmes, and promoting efficient service delivery while upholding a professional corporate image for the Directorate.

This vacancy carries specific employment equity considerations. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups, including coloured, Indian and white applicants, to apply; a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany the application. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments, covering a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, and may be subject to personnel suitability checks including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit, qualification and employment verification. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment and may use alternative recruitment processes. Placement will depend on corridor coordination and departmental needs. Applicants should note that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and that applications must be fully completed and accompanied by a comprehensive CV, with certified copies of qualifications required only at the shortlisting stage. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered, and if no response is received within three months of the closing date, the application should be regarded as unsuccessful.
