The Provincial Inspector post is located within the Traffic Management directorate of the Department of Community Safety, based in the Heidelberg Region/District. This operational role places the incumbent at the frontline of road traffic and public transport law enforcement, contributing directly to the provincial government’s mandate to ensure safe, efficient and compliant movement of people and goods. The position demands a hands-on, visible approach to policing, from directing traffic at congested points to coordinating at accident scenes and identifying hazardous locations for management intervention.
Candidates must hold a Matric Certificate and a Traffic Officer’s Diploma, together with a valid driver’s licence of at least code B. A minimum of one year of practical experience in traffic law enforcement is required, alongside a clean record with no criminal cases pending. The role calls for a broad skill set: strong record and resource management, sound customer relationship management, and a thorough understanding of road traffic and public transport policies and regulations. Knowledge of vehicle inspections, impoundment procedures, the Firearms and Ammunition Act, and departmental guidelines on overload control and escort duties is also essential. The ability to work under pressure, sharp observation skills, good driving and negotiation abilities, and sound interpersonal and conflict resolution skills are all critical. In addition, the successful candidate must have good written and verbal communication in at least two of the province’s official languages.
The core duties involve enforcing Road Traffic, Public Passenger and Transport Legislation through planned and approved activities. This includes ensuring free traffic flow, performing point duty, safeguarding accident scenes, participating in traffic policing projects and speed testing operations, issuing notices and executing arrests under relevant Acts, and attending court proceedings to give evidence. The inspector will also escort abnormal vehicles and loads, coordinate overload control management for goods and passengers, and examine driver’s licences and motor vehicles. This extends to conducting learner and driver licence tests and roadworthy tests, while monitoring compliance at Driver Licence Testing Centres and Vehicle Testing Stations. Visible traffic control and crime prevention are central, so the post requires patrolling dedicated areas, assisting motorists, executing escort duties, participating in roadblocks and special operations, and warning motorists at hazardous locations. Administrative duties include maintaining effective procedures, complying with the Firearm and Ammunition Act, participating in human resource development programmes, promoting service delivery and upholding a professional corporate image.
Applicants should note that this post involves pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, for shortlisted candidates. Personnel suitability checks, including vetting, criminal and credit record checks, and qualification and employment verification, will also be conducted. The department encourages youth, people with disability, and candidates from designated groups including coloured, Indian and white applicants, with a medical practitioner’s confirmation of disability required where applicable. Placement will be determined according to corridor coordination and departmental needs. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted; those not receiving feedback within three months should assume their application was unsuccessful.
