The successful candidate will join a team tasked with implementing planned traffic law enforcement activities and contributing to broader crime prevention initiatives. This is a hands-on role that requires both field policing and administrative discipline, as well as a strong commitment to ethical conduct and service delivery.
To be eligible, candidates must hold a Matric certificate and a Traffic Officer's Diploma, together with a valid driver's licence at least code B. A minimum of one year of practical experience in traffic law enforcement is required, and applicants must have no criminal record or any pending case. The role demands a sound knowledge of road traffic and public transport policies and regulations, as well as familiarity with vehicle inspections, impoundment procedures, the Firearms and Ammunition Act, and departmental guidelines on overload control and escort duties. Strong observation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills are essential, as is the ability to work under pressure. Good written and verbal communication in at least two provincial official languages is also required, along with sound interpersonal skills and the ability to manage records and resources effectively.
The core duties involve enforcing road traffic, public passenger transport, and transport legislation. This includes implementing approved law enforcement activities, managing traffic flow at congested points, coordinating accident scenes, and advising management on hazardous locations. The inspector will participate in traffic police projects, speed testing operations, roadblocks, and special law enforcement operations, and will issue notices and execute arrests where necessary. Court attendance and giving evidence form part of the job, as do escorting abnormal vehicles and coordinating overload control. The role also encompasses examining drivers' licences and motor vehicles, conducting learner, driver, and roadworthy tests, and monitoring compliance at Driver Licence Testing Centres and Vehicle Testing Stations. Visible policing duties include assisting motorists, patrolling dedicated areas, and warning drivers of hazards. Administrative responsibilities include maintaining effective procedures, complying with the Firearms Act, supporting operational plans, and taking part in human resource development programmes to promote efficient service delivery and uphold the professional image of the directorate.
Applicants should note that this position has specific application conditions, including the need to complete the official application form and submit a comprehensive CV. Shortlisted candidates will undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, and may be subject to personnel suitability checks such as vetting, criminal record, and qualification verification. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and the department reserves the right not to fill the post. The post is graded according to public service regulations and offers the usual service benefits.
